@thinkiamsad The pandemic was the first time I truly in-person saw tens of millions reject the evidence of their eyes and ears, literally preferring to die than get a needle in the arm

i know COVID is only getting relitigated because Republicans want a cheap shot in the arm before the midterms, but i really have no idea what you do about Americans being so painfully out of touch with reality about what happened during the pandemic

I mentioned that my garage door was making a sound. An American immediately said, "I got a guy." He did not ask what the sound was. He did not ask what kind of door. He produced a guy on the basis of the word garage. I asked who the guy was. He said, "Just a guy." He did not have a company name. He had a first name and a phone number in his phone saved as "Mike Garage." That is the contact name. Mike Garage. As though Garage is his surname. As though there is a family. I asked how he found this guy. "My brother-in-law used him." I asked if the brother-in-law was satisfied. He thought about it. Then he said, "He's still standing." The house is still standing. That is the entire review. Inside I said: THEY DO NOT KEEP RECORDS. THEY KEEP LOYALTIES. I called Mike Garage. He answered from inside a vehicle. There was wind. He said he could come Tuesday between eleven and four. Between eleven and four. A window of five hours. In my country this would be a scandal. Here it is generous. He gave me a window at all. Some guys do not give you a window. Some guys say "Tuesday" and that is the whole appointment. He came at 1:40. He fixed it in twenty minutes. He charged me less than I expected and he did not take a card, only cash or an app I had never heard of. Before leaving he looked at my water heater, which I had not mentioned, and said, "That's gonna go." I asked when. "Couple years." I asked what I should do. He said, "I'll give you a guy." He gave me a guy. Mike Garage has a guy. The guy has a guy. There is a network beneath this country made entirely of men named after their function, and none of them advertise, and all of them are busy. Inside I said: THERE IS A SECOND NATION HERE. IT HAS NO SIGNS. IT IS ENTERED ONLY BY INTRODUCTION. I have been given four guys since. I have a guy for trees. I did not know I needed a guy for trees. I have trees now, apparently. They are my responsibility. A man named Rick told me so and then left.

@Eduardo2428329 @BrAgLifeEnjoyer @theepicmap It also lists the United States of Mexico as..."Mexico", while listing the United States of America as "United States". There's no consistency here at all, I don't know why you think this proves anything.

@TotallyChadical @reasonableLP @DemzDeliver It did build them, it just didn't build them in the middle of NYC, one of the most expensive places on earth. You can afford a home on a low income, or you can live in the most desirable place in the world, but you can't do both.

@dannycantalk @DrewPavlou What peaceful people are you talking about? You can value the provision of goods and services, but that can't exist until you have enough capacity for violence that other people won't simply take your things. One precedes the other. The moment you cannot defend your goods...

@DrewPavlou Helmet guy is confusing meritocracy with some kind of "might makes right" thing. The ability to provide goods and services in a free market is merit. The ability to use violence against peaceful people is not.

I don't doubt we need private health insurance companies in context of the healthcare system as it exists. But I do think a better system would obviate the need for them. What has market competition done to improve private health insurance? What has it improved or innovated for society? Costs and profit margins for them have only increased. Just hand it to the government. Have one big insurer with a lot of negotiating power and a lot less overhead per person because it serves as the insurer for everyone. We know it's possible because it already exists, it's called Medicare, but it's only for everyone over a certain age.

People just hate logic. The world couldn't function without cost-benefit analysis. But if you're a rational person who recognizes that, others hate you. Irrational people like this woman are parasites on those of us who are rational and make society function well.

@93xashley This is precisely the sort of thing which is not medically necessary, does not improve outcomes, and should be shifted to outpatient care. When your son stays in hospital, he is taking other people’s money and throwing it away. The insurance company is right to stand up for them.

@thatazuresea You can't ask to be perceived in a certain way. Either people perceive you that way or they don't. There's nothing you can do to "earn" a certain perception, anymore than you can "earn" the love of someone who doesn't love you.

A trans movement organized along the lines of other civil-rights movements would ask that society recognize the full and equal humanity of people with unusual beliefs about their sex. This is decidedly *not* what the trans movement asks of society...
Dilan Esper@dilanesper

We debate the actual merits of trans causes endlessly, but "I want people to see my group in the way we see ourselves" is actually a basic ask of all civil rights movements and isn't some weird and unreasonable demand the trans movement made up at all.

I remember this was one of the most revealing posts I had ever read during the Covidian era, it has since been deleted by him and even scrubbed from thread roll but I was lucky enough to cap it. Now of course at the time I capped it for the purposes of ridicule, and it still comes off as unhinged. but in a deeper sense I could understand the mindset of the people most mentally captured by the overall hysteria and ideological line of that time. it was a simulation of community from a distance, an inversion of communal life that had almost been tailor made for a certain segment of the population, one where intense moralism and moral panic met a sort of distanced slacktivism and passivity, while also using that to fill in a void of communal ritual and engagement. it had morality, politics, community, shaming the chuds, safetyism, etc. all wrapped into one. So beyond my snickering and jeering of it at this, in hindsight it was truly one of the most important and honest pieces of writing to come out of that time period.

@11975MHz I know men that went to therapy and it improved their lives. I have never anyone who got better after meeting the terminally online who talking about how they "work with tools in the yard and dont need therapy"

Men already have therapy. Whenever you see a man walk away to his garage or his work shed and starts quietly doing whatever it is he does, be it sanding an old rifle stock or attaching new lights to his utility trailer -- Emily, I want you to listen to me on this -- THAT is his therapy. And it costs nothing. Men are not histrionic basket cases like women and we don't need to pay trained professionals to coo at us until we calm down like you do. This is why infantry battalions are made up of men and not women. Have you never even considered this? No, of course you haven't. You're a feminist. The only thing you've ever considered in your entire life is yourself and dealing with the ever-present miasma of box wine and cat piss. Men do not need to "go to therapy". Neither do you women, either. It's current-day contrivance. 100 years ago women in this very country were getting married at 15, 16 years old and then start producing kids in a shack with a dirt floor while their husbands got drafted off to step off a landing craft in France under severe machine gun fire that leftist cunts like you daydream you're doing the exact same thing every time you write one of your snide feminist commentaries for the NYT. You actually believe you were emotionally mature when you were 13, too. You don't have jack shit on those same women from a century ago, clothing their children in rice sacks because that's all they could afford. You're not even emotionally mature today, all while still trying to tell grown men to go pay some doctor to talk about their feelings. The most patriotic thing anyone can do these days is telling someone like you to just shut the fuck up.
emily may@emilykmay

there is a good chunk of men who need therapy just to learn that they have feelings and how to deal with them. women learn that when they are 13.
