@Karn338331 @wwarrior_1 So the original discussion was about fans, not gamers. Your concern seems to be with the personalities of some people who insert themselves as knowledgeable on a topic they know nothing about. That happens almost everywhere. But it doesn't mean they can't be a fan.

@HazzrdB @wwarrior_1 the original discussion was about people inserting their opinions about games as if they were the objectively correct authority on the topics, only to find out they literally never played the games in the first place "I dont have to play to be a fan" is their defensible position

@Thatisdiffi The beauty of all this is you get to feel that way, other people get to feel their way. I believe trying to tell people how to enjoy something or what they can call themselves just feels petty and unnecessary.

No WATCHING playthroughs on yt DOES NOT make you a gamer. You are just a viewer. Without your own actual physical presence and input, you are just an observer of someone else's activity. And there is nothing elitist about this.

@RobSchneider @grok On the same day after approval. The approval process requires appointments and time. Also I don't think "Grok confirms" is the burn you think it is.

@dimaggio443 @AlexMD2003 @Thwlkytalky @elbethium Right? I rarely complete games for a variety of reasons. There are definitely people who know more about the games I enjoy, even though they have only watched it. I don't know how the game ends but I can say I'm a fan just because I played 50% of it?

@revenant_MMXX Did you realize that you can also casually play sports with friends or with a local recreational league, you don't have to be a pro player. Hell you could have a basketball hoop in your driveway. Why would someone call themselves a basketball fan and refuse to play?

You people are getting filtered so hard by this sports argument. Being a pro sports player is not a hobby, it's an exclusive job most people can't do even if they want to. If you think this is analogous to not playing a video game you pretend to like, your brain is broken.

@MEATMAAAAN Actually, Americans would understand how stupid and petulant this entire debate is from your side. They would imagine how many people love watching football, but not actually enjoy playing football, and how it’s perfectly valid to be a football fan that only watches it on TV.

@AlexMD2003 @Thwlkytalky @elbethium There's absolutely a difference, but the point is reading a summary is a quick overview of the whole movie. Watching the entire game still gets you the whole game. You just don't know the feel of the controller, but you can understand the theory of the mechanics and gameplay.

@Thwlkytalky @elbethium Well here’s the thing. Games are an interactive medium. Regardless of how thoroughly a person views gameplay they still aren’t playing it. There’s a steep difference between watching someone play a game and playing it yourself no matter how attentive you are.

@revenant_MMXX I agree with this analogy but I think that a lot of people fighting it have never actually read a book. Because when you read, you have the chance to slow down, analyze themes, meaning, and the nuances of the writing. Listening to an audiobook is a surface level experience.

Actually, yes, I would say that listening to an audiobook isn't the same as reading. The entire point is that you can do something else while listening. No one gives their undivided attention to an audiobook. It's a cheatcode to avoid having to actually read.

@LonghairTatum @rorachoc I have never actually understood how it's enjoyable to watch people play games, but I respect that some people prefer that. As long as they don't try to speak at a level which they haven't experienced then I don't see a problem in somebody being an enthusiastic spectator fan.

@LonghairTatum @rorachoc I think we're circling around the fact that there is a particular portion of the watchers who try to be heavily opinionated on a game they haven't played, but the discussion has widened to diminishing the experience of every person who likes watching games.

@rorachoc You're absolutely right and people are getting stuck on this. Watching and playing are different experiences, but they're both valid ways to experience the media. Being a fan is entirely about enthusiasm. But also more fans means more games. Even if some of those fans watch

@LonghairTatum @rorachoc It is going to be a fundamentally different experience. But I would say you might have the potential to remember plot points better when you're not also having to think about the gameplay. In some cases playing it may cement it in someone's mind stronger, but not for everybody

@rorachoc Fan, I would feel you will have to play it in order to understand the game more. Like you won’t remember plot points as well if you just watched it

@HazzrdB @dowdurvfxi7900 @AmagiInnkeeper @aleahh0 I watched my Dad play RE2 when I was 5. I didn't touch the game till last year when it was re-released on the PS5. Just because I watch someone close to me or my favorite YouTube personality play a game that I think looks cool doesn't make me a fan

@phlaiahnwal @TimJosling @libriscent Exactly why is there such a desire to make a game out of communication? Like objectively using direct terms to communicate alleviates confusion. Tone context and emotion can still be used to refine that communication. But why use a word you don't actually mean?

@dowdurvfxi7900 @AmagiInnkeeper @aleahh0 So you're talking about people specifically misrepresenting themselves as an expert on the topic in a discussion. But this conversation is about who can define themselves as a fan.

🚨 Breaking News 🚨 You can’t be a fan of a video game if you never played the game. It’s not ok just to watch videos of games and never play them.

@NEHWind You're fighting over! Who gets to claim the most status in their enjoyment of a video game? You put more time into it so you deserve more recognition? There is no need to compete with levels of fandom.

I wish this was a Resident Evil exclusive phenomenon but it's rampant. Truckloads of people will watch fifteen longplays and "iceburg" videos over a saturday and pretend they're on the same level as the people who dedicated thirty years of time, money and energy to the franchise.
