Some coach to win championships. Others to forge meaningful & lasting relationships & steer individuals in a positive direction. Tom Borrelli did both. The sport & countless others are better because of his leadership over the last 40+ years. Thanks dad & congrats! See you in KC!

I do my best thinking when the rest of the world is a little more quiet. 🩷 This sport is tough. As a previous college athlete ( don’t judge that on my Appearance now or the hurt I feel getting up and down Matside 9 hours in…) I wish I had known or someone Had told me these things a few more times….. So for all of you athletes…( my bigs/lils and others) if you need to hear it- Read these…… 1- If 40% is all you can give and you give me that 40- you’re giving 100% of what you are capable of giving. 2-Don’t forget how far you’ve come- The time and sacrifices it takes to even get to this level is truly inspiring and never a waste of time or passion. 3-Failure doesn’t hold a candle to What regret feels like. 4-I’m proud of you. Not because of your win/loss record or the accolades you have received, but simply having the courage to walk out on that mat knowing that today your best may not be enough to win- and yet you do it anyways. 5-Don’t be so quick to hurry through it. Through the joy and through the pain. Let them both sink in a little. Don’t linger too long, but enough time to recall what confidence feels like and enough time to grow from the pain you felt. 6- Anything can be used For motivation. I used to think I had to be motivated by something or someone. We can create motivation ourselves. 7- Trust. You will only go so far on your own. No one reaches the highest of levels without help. Trust the ones put in positions to help you. 8- Take knowledge from anywhere you find it. Sometimes someone can explain something by a different phrase or motion that just clicks. You are limiting yourself by working with/asking questions to only one person. 9- I love you. Why do we hold back saying this so much? Love isn’t meant to be conditional or earned. * told Doug one day I’m gonna just say it to all our kids because I do love them and if it’s weird it’s weird, but if I sent my kid off to college I want him to be loved and cared for just as much as he is Pushed and taught. 10- Lastly, mental health isn’t something you have to wait until you’re struggling to work on. I can look back now and identify anxiety and perfectionism all throughout my college sports experience. Heck we are trained to be performance driven and usually rewarded for good performance. What happens if we don’t make an effort to work on this? Well as we get older we start to associate good performance =valued, Lovable, worthy and a bad performance=not good enough, unlovable, unworthy. * *COACHES ( and parents) THE WORDS YOU SPEAK IN THE MOMENTS AFTER A practice, meet, or tournament have an exponential effect on how some will view their Worth and if it will be based On Their Performances. If you read any of these and you wish someone had told you it growing up a little more or maybe even now go ahead and🩷 this and send to someone you know who needs to read it too.

Playing a sport was once merely play. Until… Something happened on the way to the SAT test. The ACT. The AP. the ECNL. The GA. The GPA. The MLS Next. The ODP. The NCAA. The D1. The ID. The Showcase. Somewhere along the line, play became a burden. Let them play. #TOVO

Powerful Protocols ✏️ ✔️ When you are clear on what is important and you establish the routines to reinforce what you value, you promote more learning as an efficient educator. ❌ Inconsistency in either your character or your protocols burdens players. #TOVO

Dear Youth Coach… Bitching, berating and barking at young athletes from the sidelines does not make them tough or prepare them for life. It creates the next generation of poor coaches who will bitch, berate and bark at others. #TOVO

OUR MISTAKE Do not sub kids out for making a mistake. Instead… ▪️Expect mistakes and strengthen a player’s capacity to play beyond them. #TOVO

Let’s be honest… Coaches, if we are not willing or capable of handling reasonably presented questions, we are not leaders. Parents deserve answers and we should be excited and inspired to provide them in great detail. #TOVO

Perspective 99.99999% of the population has no idea who won your tournament bracket this weekend nor care. 100% of the children in your charge care about how you made them feel this weekend. Agree or Disagree?

Tactics 101 ✏️ ▪️The most important tactic you need to master is how to nurture young people into kind, courageous and capable adults. Figure this out and match tactics will follow suit. #TOVO

@Don_K_Williams @DJHadersPhD Unfortunately, there are always hoops. The non major player may have also saved 20,000 dollars which to most normal families is a big hoop. You really just have to decide what hoop you can and are willing to jump in or through. Do you really even want what the hoop has to offer?

An NCAA D1 tournament coach & I were discussing a player today, we both like her, but he was so SPOT ON with this comment: “Yeah that’s a tough one She seems like she could be a decent little player but the competition is so bad (Not telling you anything you don’t know here…). Would really need to see her against better players/athletes” That’s the problem with most ID opportunities

It seems that society places more pressure on children to have grit and rigor than it does adults. Children need to first experience success to build confidence, which leads to trying harder things or sticking with it longer, because they have built confidence from past success.

@fitsoccerqueen Not sure if the decision maker is ever standing alone as well. So many voices telling us different things. Many well intended. Possibly, who we decide to listen to is the question we must ask before we decide where we will play. Surround yourself with people shared values!

@fitsoccerqueen If college is the only outcome we have missed the mark. So much more to evaluate and measure on the other side of that divider if it's important to us. Unfortunately, for many (me included at times) we get distracted with less important things.
