@RX_9999_2 Japanese are really not large enough a group in the USA to stand out. Except perhaps in Hawaii, but I don’t think those came from the best parts of Japanese society.

@SaysSimulation In addition to the global economic damage, presumably Iran’s missiles will target Arab & Israeli life support infrastructure causing at least a resettlement crisis if not mass death.

Another way of looking at this is that Iran is threatening to do tremendous damage to the world over the next month. And Trump is saying if you do that, we will destroy your infrastructure for the next decade, starting in two days. Quite the negotiations! 5/

@SaysSimulation This is perfectly reasonable: US and other nuclear powers have explicit doctrines around thermonuclear war in existential situations, this is Irans version of that.

@Indian_Bronson Against the war: * those who hate how the war corrupts the American nation and immiserates the populace * those who find the conduct of the war dishonorable and/or immoral * those who find the war and its aims retarded For the war: * reckless psychopaths * [REDACTED]

It's a fair enough question, even though many would disagree with the precise framing - but let's say: 'Many Americans seem to be rooting for Iranian resistance to US military operations in Iran'. That seems to me like a very factual statement! And one worth answering. I will try to write as simply as I can (Shaun is ofc, brilliant, and this is mostly an exercise for my own discipline) as straightforwardly as I can: Americans feel basically disgusted by the US Government at the moment for a few reasons. First and foremost, a basic premise of the MAGA / America First movement was an end to elective wars waged for, if not entirely, in part driven by foreign interests. Trump dominated Jeb Bush - who was much better funded and more serious as a frontrunner candidate - in South Carolina's primary debate in 2016 (now a decade ago, then but 5 years after the sort-of end of the Iraq War) by saying what everyone, especially the White Working Class (which had been trending ever more rightward on issues of PC Culture and Immigration), in unison with the sincerely anti-War left had been saying: 'The Iraq War was a big fat mistake.' And it was. The entire war was completely irredeemable and frankly, criminal in how it was prosecuted. We should absolutely pursue a legal route as a country of putting many people involved in knowingly spreading likes about Saddam's WMD program in jail or worse. Americans by 2016 were absolutely sick of war, and this was highlighted by their revulsion for Hillary Clinton seemingly celebrating the ouster (and brutal murder) of Gaddafi alongside callousness towards the plight of service members facing the brunt of blowback in Bengazi ("We came, we saw, he died" and "What difference at this point, would it make?"). Trump won in 2016, and through the 2024 election, including the 2020 campaign and through the Biden years in the middle, his supporters always pointed out that Trump started no new wars. In fact, as recently as this past June, huge conservative influencers like Charlie Kirk - who was growing increasingly critical of Israel before his assassination - were praising Trump for seemingly being able to act in a US security interest (keeping the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran from getting a nuke) while not pursuing what is clearly a foreign priority (engaging in a regime change war). So in light of all of that, alongside - for the right at least - a clearly massively de-prioritized domestic agenda of immigration enforcement, actions to go to war seem like rank hypocrisy and an about face on campaign promises, motivated by the intense lobbying and coordination between permanent-enough members of government in the US and Israel alike. That is what has Americans, including sincerely patriotic, nationalist, right wing Americans - if not especially them - extremely riled up and contemptuous of what the US government is doing.

How did we get to the point Where so many Americans are rooting against America?

@ddd23 Another reason to consider: Christianity (like Islam) also functions as a social technology to bind different peoples together into one coherent society. My understanding is that Japan hasn’t needed to solve that problem. (Or, as you say, solved it its own way 3000 years ago)

Nosu (らきのす)@luckynosu

The important bit: As more young/non-asset owning Americans realize the US establishment impoverished them by inflationary monetary policy to insulate older/asset owning Americans, the establishment is starting to worry they will opt out & live well for doing so

@Clunio @Tats_Gunso Very interesting! I wonder if this implies that the Japanese did not internalize this same distinction regarding the Mongols, that meat-eating came from pastoralism and not hunting. I suppose this was not the main concern during the Japanese/Mongol interactions, or was forgotten.

(EvoPsy)@selfcomestomine
