It requires people to be selfish, which they are. Rational is a charged word because even what is rational for you is not what would be rational for you, if your status different. I should provide an example. You think all those rich people mismanage giant companies at their loss? The company loses money, those who manage it care about stock value being the highest at the exact moment their premium is decided. In long term it might as well kill the company, it doesn't matter. Similar for stock owners that only wish to for the value to rise temporarily so they can sell it for profit. That or borrow against the company to channel the money elsewhere and after that things can even be run to the ground it doesn't matter. Rich people, like regular people, are selfish. If they are stupid enough, they can lose their fortunes, but too many people assume things based on surface level understanding. What looks stupid might be smart when you know the bigger picture.
