A better stance would be to allow the immigrants in for a few years while investing more into education, including that of trades, to get more tradies.

Every immigrant brought in to fill anything less than an extremely niche high-skill role (semiconductor fab etc) is completely unnecessary and wasteful. We don’t need or want more immigrants. We do need and want to invest in New Zealanders.
