I kept this story in my pocket for a long time.... In Pittsburgh, September 15th is Roberto Clemente Day. Every year the whole organization fans out across the city. It's like Christmas. Roberto's family is there, Vera and the boys. My first year as manager was 2011. We celebrated. We shook hands and moved on. We didn't win. 19 consecutive losing seasons. 2012 rolls around. Same day, same celebration. We had another losing season, our 20th consecutive. After the ceremony, Roberto Jr. walked over. "My mom wants to talk to you." We went into the dugout. Me, Vera, and her three sons. She spoke in Spanish. I played four years of winter ball so I understood enough. She wasn't angry, but she was passionate. And I kept hearing Roberto's number come up. Roberto Jr. translated. "My mother wants you to know that there cannot be a 21st losing season. That was Roberto's number. It would be a disgrace to his legacy." She was staring right at me. Before I could even think about what to say, words came out of my mouth: "I promise you, Vera. That won't happen." Roberto Jr. looked at me and said, "You made my mom a promise. I hope you can keep it." I said, "I hope I can keep it too." I didn't tell my coaches. I didn't tell the players. I told my wife. That was it. The next year, 2013, we broke the consecutive seasons losing streak. Ended it at 20. On Roberto Clemente Day that September, Vera came walking across that field. And I probably got one of the most meaningful hugs I've ever received in my life. The players did all the heavy lifting. I just got the hug. Some promises are worth making before you know if you can keep them. @Pirates

@ChrisMuellerPGH I was reading articles that he barely golfs leisurely anymore and would rather fish. Some of those LIV guys genuinely care, but it seemed like he took the bag doesn’t have that drive anymore. Could be wrong.

Getting way out ahead of things here, but Cam Smith being in the hunt on Sunday would be intriguing. He ran down Rory and Cam Young to win his only major, so you know the moment wouldn't be too big...or would it, given how long he's been away from that kind of situation?

@iamrahstradamus It's to the point where I'm just hoping my team plays on as many Sunday afternoons as possible.

I'm not a fan of this at all. Thanksgiving Eve is one of the best party days of the year. It's also a travel day for many people as they go home to see their family. I love the NFL but it doesn't need to completely monopolize our lives plus with so many games Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, that Sunday after Thanksgiving isn't as good.

I called this a year ago. The ball rollback won’t happen. And it didn’t do enough anyway. Cam Young is using a post 2028 rollback golf ball. He still hits it just as far, but actually has MORE control. Talk about a backfire. The USGA truly didn’t plan this well.

Yup. Season tickets - both full and partial plans - are the lifeblood and backbone of any sports franchise and their attendance success/shortcomings. I’d venture a guess that record season ticket sales in the history of the Pirates franchise was 2015 (or likely 2016). No one was picking up the phone saying, “Sign me up for 81!” after 2025. Attendance figures are very much delayed gratification from sustained and substantial on-field results. No great secret.

Great... Another trip overseas for the #Steelers. Games in New Orleans are rare and we have a terrific fan base in the South and it’s a great place to go for an away game. All about the fans though right @nflcommish ??
