My dude The Odyssey is an ancient myth. There are monsters and shit throughout. It is not a “historical film.” Also as far as we know Homer wasn’t stopping every other line to specify what races the characters were.

If putting a Black or a trans person in a film, even briefly, is what makes a film "Woke", then that word really has no meaning anymore.
"Woke" is about the message, the theme; from all reports the message of the film is not Woke at all - perhaps even the opposite.

Something is not a decent film if it makes Helen of Troy black, or has a tranny playing a Greek soldier. Bastardizing and humiliating one of the most ancient stories of Western Civilization is NEVER going to be “good story telling”. I don’t need to be a nuanced film critic to see that, and neither do you.

Just saw The Odyssey in IMAX. Theater was packed. The film is a work of art. Breathtakingly done. 10/10.
It’s been decades since I read the book. If there’s consequential changes, I didn’t notice them. It’s not “woke” to my eyes. It’s rich with the struggles of the human condition.

This is like saying you can’t judge heroin until you take it. And of course, the moment you take it, you truly enjoy it. But that’s not what it’s really about. It’s about how it chains your body and drains your soul.
I was dragged to it. Someone else paid. And I will say this:
The screenplay was well done. The action was good. As someone who just finished The Odyssey with my students, I felt it stayed relatively true to the story (though things could have been transitioned and explained better).
All that said, I will never recommend it to anyone. It doesn’t portray the actual historical ethnicities involved and distorts truth intentionally. And for that, I actually strongly urge everyone to NOT watch this, and instead just go read The Odyssey.
You’ll be much more satisfied in the end. And then you won’t have to find yourself defending historical revisionism online.

Metacritic is showing a more accurate picture of the real rating for the movie, rated at a 5.7 average.
