@Wildharv I’ve always felt that there is a certain amount of jealousy in the fearful. They do not have the courage to be free; and do not want you to be either, freedom comes with risks they can not stomach and that is what makes them argue for “equity” in the place of freedom.

I’m often asked about the pegboard scene in VISION QUEST. That was all me. No stunt doubles or safety measures. I trained for a long time and had to climb it several times to get all the angles. The “trick” is not to over extend, so you’d be pulling up your entire body weight. You have to keep it compact. The United States has the largest prison population on earth. Not per capita. Total. More people in cages than China. More than Russia. More than every "authoritarian" state it condemns in its annual human rights reports. 1.8 million people. Disproportionately Black. Disproportionately poor. Disproportionately from the zip codes with the worst schools, the fewest jobs, the most abandoned infrastructure. This is presented as a "criminal justice system." It functions as a labor system. Prison labor, paid between 13 cents and $1.15 an hour in most states, produces goods for McDonald's, Walmart, Victoria's Secret, Whole Foods, and the United States military. The 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery, contains an exception clause: "Except as punishment for crime." That exception has never been closed. It has been expanded. The plantation did not disappear. It received a different name and a legal foundation.

This is what I’m implying when I say credit has completely ruined society and the economy. Not the credit itself but the way people use it and the kickbacks the lenders receive. On one side of the coin you have people with credit card debt worth more than their annual salary and just don’t care. On the other side you have people who seem to be obsessed with achieving a number that doesn’t follow them into the coffin. Sure having a great credit score helps with things like keeping interest down, but I’ve also watched the pursuit of great credit cause legitimate panic & anxiety attacks.

My wife tried explaining to me how people get multiple credit cards into thousands of dollars of debt and frankly I still don’t understand it. “They just don’t pay attention.” HOW DO YOU NOT PAY ATTENTION TO MULTIPLE CARDS WITH $4000+ of DEBT?!?!?!?!? like genuinely how do you spend that much and not even notice ? I spend $12 on lunch and I pay it. Do they just not check alerts ? Do they not make any payments ?!?!? I just genuinely do not understand being that fiscally irresponsible.

@FightWithMemes Yeah, they never passed on the saving of self checkout to the consumer. They just added the additional expected losses from error or outright theft to costs and everyone that doesn't steal gets stuck with it.

I remember retail when self checkouts were just becoming popular, and seeing multiple CAPS LOCK Americans crashout about it. "tHeYR'e tAKinG JaHbz aWay!" I remember thinking, "I wonder if people did the same thing with every tool?" Did they freak when The Home Depot started using forklifts? They should've employed a bunch of strong men to move pallets. When stores began using cash registers and calculators? How man smart Asian guys with abacuses wer put out of work?

@9mmsmg I think that there’s a middle path. Where AI can address things like food production, along with robotics food could be grown without pesticides/herbicides. Navigating the economic disruption will be difficult.

The proliferation of AI is so interesting, especially when looking into the future. It ends one of two ways. 1. Universal high basic income that creates a utopia where work is optional and all the people's needs are met and then some. 2. Government bread lines after a large portion of society becomes a new permanent underclass. The government and tech leaders now control everything because they control the food. Inevitably, this leads to people gathering outside data centers with pitchforks and torches. I'll let you guess which is the more likely outcome.
