I am staying with “alleged” on this story. It’s been pushed by Israeli politicians and unnamed US officials with a line designed to widen the conflict. Yet, Iran deny it. Something doesn’t add up, and it would help to see some tangible evidence. The UK is right not to overreact.

On Saturday, the Israel Defence Forces posted on social media that Iran has missiles "that can reach London, Paris or Berlin". "There is no assessment to substantiate what's being said," British Housing Secretary Reed told the BBC. "I'm not aware of any assessment at all that they are even trying to target Europe, let alone that they could if they tried."

I am very proud of @SteveReedMP here, who insists there is no evidence that Iran is targeting Europe. When pressed to say if that meant the IDF’s claims were untrue, basically being baited to cause a diplomatic episode: “You would need to ask the Israelis, but whatever people might say, the UK is not going to be dragged into this war.” Kuensberg continued, Israel’s statement was not speculation, but an on-the-record statement from one of our allies. Why would Israel say something that is not true, she asks. At a time of high emotions and fear, one of the country's most senior political journalist makes a poor attempt to clarify the situation and, to me, more readily accepts the intelligence of a foreign nation with its own agenda rather than our own.

So, it's reported that Iran fired missiles at Diego Garcia island in Indian Ocean. But they didn't reach there. And nobody but the military "saw" them. Yet off the back of this "incident", suddenly all of Europe is under threat of Iranian missiles. You see how this works....?
