@cabindotcity @artizen @JonathanHillis @RJPinnell Q/thought: how about some creative dwelling prototype/installation, that is exploratorily oriented to Cabin & #NetworkCity kinds of circumstances, needs, vibes? speculative next Cabin "shed room" imagining.

@AndrewDamitio @rjsheperd a critique & counter-proposal for @PortlandGov's #FundedInclusionary Housing policy—for transparency, cost-efficiency, equity— in testimony, Jan 16 Council hearing. c/@andersem @serenalarkin @danbertolet @sightline #InclusionaryHousing #InclusionaryZoning x.com/tmccormick/sta…
Tim McCormick@tmccormick

@andersem a foregone conclusion, and also opportunity; but an opening to move towards much better #FundedInclusionary Housing policy that maximizes affordability impact by openly seeking best use of funds—e.g. accross new, existing, alternate types of building: x.com/tmccormick/sta…

@kevinvdahlgren awesome work by this DIY house-builder in Bend! I'd like to support him (& all #SelfBuild-ers!) to design, build creative low-cost housing for many others, & also make case for policies & programs to facilitate this. See note below, I'm working on such with Portland non-profits

@CSElmendorf @CityJournal on ways to break out of #HousingTreadmill & address workforce issues, here'a a radical alternative I'm working on in PDX w/non-profit: hiring & training formerly unhoused to build v low-cost cottage homes, for their rehousing & also resiteable as ADUs.🧵 twitter.com/tmccormick/sta…?

I'd love to engage with @CSElmendorf offline on points I made in 2019 re labor. It seems you subscribe to a belief that "if we entitle it, [enough productive workers] will come." I don't see evidence that builders will do what it takes to attract enough. mercurynews.com/2019/04/14/opi…

@MeiraGebel @axios a simple, low-$ way for #TinyHomeShelters to lead to long-term housing is make them better, upgradeable, convertible for eg #AccessoryDwellings / #CottageCluster. Still strangely inconceivable or undiscussable in most places, tho see @SenJoshBecker's #OpportunityHousing #SB634

@andersem @GovTinaKotek OR's landmark housing legislation could open up abundance & innovation, & even help rapidly build permanent #alternativehousing for/with the unhoused, if guided: as seen in KPTV report today w/#CascadiaClusters I work with kptv.com/2023/03/29/ore…. #HB2001 (#OHNA) + #HB5019 #orleg

spend $45k to put unsheltered homeless into apartment for 1 year, or $20k to hire them to help design & build permanent(able) homes of their own? My testimony today at @MultCo (Portland) budget hearing, for a pilot comparing approaches: youtube.com/watch?v=LwQ7wr… (at around 54:00)

@andersem how about also preapproved foundation systems, providing standardized 'connectors' to which many possible housing plans/products might fit, perhaps #demountable? As proposed @NewStarterHomes, & analogous to software APIs—[Building] Programming Interfaces tmccormick.org/projects/new-s…

@andersem Developing a set of permit-ready, pre-approved housing plans is one of those "off-the-shelf efficiency measures" we plan to create thanks to HB 2001. In addition to being a resource, those plans are a tool in the toolbox when accountability conversations with cities get serious.

I've heard about pre-approved home designs at the city level but never thought about them at the STATE level. Are any states doing this?

“Housing is not about form but about the process that leads to the act of dwelling & to the distribution of power within that process: who decides when about what?” —N. John #Habraken (b. 1928), Dutch architect, theorist of resident agency, a key inspiration to me, astutely assessed by @cshep @PlacesJournal

Check out my latest article on @PlacesJournal placesjournal.org/article/recons… Now, more than ever, we need many new ideas to address our housing emergency; we also need to revisit overlooked strategies from our recent past...

@SparksTonyc amazing book on the substantially forgotten history of #shantytowns (& such) in the US: Lisa Goff @lisa_goff @UVA (2016). Shantytown, USA: Forgotten Landscapes of the Working Poor. books.google.com/books/about/Sh…

@SparksTonyc first that comes to mind is, you might call a myth or perhaps more a Q: "homeless encampment" is the right term, ie appropriate & sufficient for what's being discussed. (if not defined & related to other terms. Eg camp, settlement, shanty. Btw just read an amazing book on this!)
