Last year, @nbrhoodwrkshop & I estimated the minimum rent to create each of 7 newly legalized living options in PDX. I'd spent half my 30s fighting to legalize 4plexes, But they were blown out of the water by one that pencils at $464/month: a backyard RV w/ utility hookups.

"What I want," Tim writes, is for a home "to help me make the world my extended space, not to enclose more space privately for me."

"And bans on movable homes specifically deny people having a longer-term or permanent home when their needs, wishes, and opportunities lead them to relocate." Sometimes, mobility of one's dwelling is a path to *more* stability in one's life.

This is a guest article by @tmccormick of @HousingAlterna & @vehicleresident. Though Tim & I don't always see eye to eye, he helped open mine to a blind spot I didn't know I had: the value, for some, of housing *mobility.* It's haunted me since & I hope it haunts you too.
