Pleasure is refined (art, cuisine, courtship) but still heavily regulated. Pain is transformed into virtue (honor, sacrifice). A civilization that reaches Type-3 on the Kardashev scale (galactic energy) but remains stuck at HMS-1 or HMS-2 is almost guaranteed to self-destruct within centuries.
