Emergent storytelling in DnD is great, but only when it's a byproduct of the game and not the main goal. Game starts with basically blank characters and then their decisions, situations and rolls shape their personality as we go along - peak TTRPG. Game is all about OCs with convoluted backstories, where they try to do a Critical Role and talk to each other in-character from the very first session - absolute fucking theater kid cringe.

@Gingerblast Plus, plenty of gaming groups are fine with a railroad story. I have had players where they have 0 desire to create story or character. They just want you to point them at monsters and let them roll dice.

Matt Mercer is good at running a show. This advice is actually not bad if your goal is to run a show. I am quite glad that common RPG wisdom has been moving away from show advice and towards game advice
