Many Africans have suggested that the only way to protect African resources from imperialists is to develop nuclear weapons. But this will never happen due to a specific treaty known as the Pelindaba Treaty. Here's all you need to know about it. 1. The Pelindaba Treaty is officially known as the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty. It is named after Pelindaba, a city in South Africa, which hosted South Africa’s main nuclear research facility until 1989. 2. The Pelindaba Treaty bans the research, development, manufacture, stockpiling, testing, possession, and stationing of nuclear weapons in any African country party to the treaty. 3. It was adopted by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on 2nd June, 1995, and as of May 2022, it has been ratified (given final legal approval) by 44 African States. 10 states have signed but have not ratified it, and South Sudan is the only country not party to the treaty. 4. The explicit objective is to ensure an Africa that is free of nuclear weapons for the promotion of peace and security. However, many have opined that it is a treaty that ensures that Africa has no deterrence against colonial, imperial, or neo-colonial powers, effectively making African countries sitting ducks that can be invaded at whim. 5. If African countries remain party to this treaty, forget about the development of nuclear weapons in Africa. 6.
