A female elephant sees a baby hippopotamus leave its herd and toddle off toward the lake to play. Knowing that crocodiles are lurking in the water, it tries to chase the baby hippo back to the safety of its group. 💖✨ When it meets the mother hippo, it’s basically like: “Please keep an eye on your child, ma’am hippo.” 😔

If (like me) you’re a dog lover or (like me) a JAMES STEWART fan - I’m sure you’ll be moved by Jimmy’s poem about his much loved dog ‘Beau’, which he read out on The Tonight Show in 1981 to a visibly moved Johnny Carson. JIMMY was born 118yrs ago today.

Well since you asked I am on the USHJA tb task force. We have formally proposed a Hunter derby series that has been submitted for review hopefully starting with the 2027 series. It was a vision that came to me last March 2025… I was explaining to Roderick Watchman why my daughter’s equitation horse was not worth near what her Hunter Derby horse was and it hit me like a ton of bricks. We needed a TB Hunter derby series w obscene prize money (which compared to purses is not close of obscene) I am part of the organization of the $25,000 Upperville hunter derby for Tbs. This is the first of its kind and the response was literally Gobemacking. 67 entries with a waiting list!!!! Then we turned our attention to the Warrenton hunter derby. Gainesway where Brian Graves was kind enough to answer my call sponsor and take the call for the inaugural Bill Grave memorial Tb Hunter derby. I then got a call from Mike Levy of Murifield, who also wanted to be a part of the excitement of providing second career opportunities. So we came up with a $7500 bill Graves challenge cup that rewards the Highpoint Tb from the Upperville and Warrenton shows. On top of that we supersized the TAKE2 classes held at the Kentucky horse park all this summer. Sergio of Hidden Brook, Dr. Scott Morrison of Rood and riddle I found generous sponsors of those classes. The first weekend entries were up 200%. We have started monthly brainstorming /collaborative sessions with the Who’s Who of the second career world inc the leadership of TAA, new vocations, Amplify, ABR, TCA, TIP, RRP, etc. I met with Dan Metzger, thinking about launching monthly brainstorming sessions to see what solvable issues other than aftercare we might be able to tackle. Communication is my specialty and I am lucky that I bridge Both the sport horse and the racehorse world. There are many incredible people that I’m lucky to deal with on a daily basis, and I have realized that a lot of our issues have come because there are not people that straddle both worlds. I believe we have been handling the problem of second careers from upside down model. Instead of trying to support the bottom, we need to create demand at the top of our second career horses. Instead of the Thoroughbred being the pariah of the sport horse world which they have become since their heyday when they were king in the 80s, when I was riding as a child…. we can reverse this trend by having substantial or I should say obscene prize money provided for those people that choose to add a Tb sport horse into their barn. What has happened already just with the launch of two major derbies at two major shows has been candidly overwhelming. If you follow me on Facebook, I post all of the updates and all of the stuff that is going on currently. More ideas: Working with Erin and Mike with the TCA and Kristen with TIP and Stacie w TAA we have been discussing coming up with a digital calendar all things Thoroughbred. Also: And it’s infant stages right now. The Thoroughbred transition network is what was proposed and a brilliant name created from many smart people that want to ensure our horses have second career demand the same that they do first. I’m happy to talk to you and tell you all of the amazing things that are going on. Honestly, I spent a lot of my time giddy about the potential. Many many of us will be at the June 2 Upperville Va Hunter derby. There will be the majority of the Task Force there if not all of them… Along with some incredible TCA Board members and fellow Racing enthusiasts. I know this is a very long-winded reply, but there is a lot going on and being transparent, communicative, collaborative are the keys to us working together to create a sustainable second career life for athletes. If there’s high demand for the able-bodied ones, then there will be way more money to support the pasture pets. My energy is endless supplied by those amazing men and women I am lucky enough to work daily with making these changes and differences. I hope after the June 8 board meeting I have more fantastic news to share with you. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and the big pie in the sky idea is to one day have just like we do the Breeders cup Thoroughbred Racing championships… Why can we not have the Thoroughbred equestrian championships? At even 10% of the current purses of the Breeders cup it would be game changing. It would be an entire day celebrating the Thoroughbred in whatever discipline we could support. Hunter, jumper, Eventer, barrel, racing, polo, etc. Considering we have 65 entries in the TAKE2 class at the Upperville horse show and a waiting list for the 25k Derby., this is just the first show. This is just the beginning of the Thoroughbred Sport horse renaissance and I am beyond honored to be a part of it. 🐎💥🙌

I am running for a spot on the @BreedersCup board and I respectfully ask that if you have a vote(s) that you please vote+ 🗳️ include me in your ballot. I believe I have earned a seat at the table + have been working tirelessly for the betterment of our Tb athletes, both Before, During and After their race careers. ALL I want is the Resurgence of the racehorse and the Renaissance of the Tb sport horse. 🐎 IT CAN BE DONE but we need strong leaders, communication, passion and Cooperation to succeed at these goals.

DID YOU KNOW?? The majestic, all-white coat of the Great Pyrenees was intentionally engineered by ancient shepherds not for beauty, but to serve as a critical tactical camouflage system during pitch-black midnight battles with apex predators! Bred thousands of years ago to protect livestock in the treacherous Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain, these giant, 140-pound dogs function as independent, nocturnal security units. Shepherds specifically selected solid white coats so that in the dead of night, they could instantly distinguish their guardian dogs from invading gray wolves or brown bears in low-light conditions, preventing the humans from accidentally shooting their own protectors. Walk with me 👇🏾👇🏾 1. The Hardwired Nocturnal Subconscious: Many modern suburban owners are shocked to find that their family Great Pyrenees undergoes a profound behavioral transformation the exact moment the sun sets. Because mountain predators traditionally hunt under the cover of darkness, Pyrs are fundamentally nocturnal by evolutionary design. While they might lounge around as lazy, sluggish "throw rugs" during the day, their internal biological clock activates at night. They enter a state of hyper-vigilance, pacing perimeters, sitting at elevated strategic vantage points, and letting out a deep, booming, territorial bark at the microscopic sound of a leaf dropping miles away to warn threats to stay back. 2. The Genetic Mutation of the Double Dewclaw: If you look closely at the rear legs of a purebred Great Pyrenees, you will find a bizarre anatomical anomaly: they possess fully functional double dewclaws. While most dog breeds have a single, useless thumb-like claw on their front paws and none on their back, the Pyr features two distinct, boned claws on each hind foot. This isn't a genetic deformity; it is an evolutionary alpine adaptation. These extra claws act like miniature snowshoes and crampons, providing the heavy, massive dog with vital physical stability and traction when fighting off predators or navigating sheer, ice-covered mountain ledges. 3. The "Stand-and-Stare" Psychological Armor: Unlike herding dogs like Border Collies, which rely on predatory drive to chase and control animals, the Great Pyrenees completely lacks a standard canine chase instinct. They do not pursue threats because running away would leave their flock completely exposed to a secondary ambush. Instead, they utilize a specialized defense technique known as STAND-AND-STARE DETERRENCE. A Pyr will physically position its massive body directly between the threat and its family, square its shoulders, hold intense eye contact, and expand its heavy neck ruff, which acts as built-in armor against throat-bites, relying on pure psychological intimidation to force apex predators to retreat without a drop of blood being shed. 4. The Apex Predator Resurgence: The unique evolutionary programming of the Great Pyrenees has made them the absolute gold standard for non-lethal wildlife conservation initiatives worldwide. In recent times, wolf and grizzly bear populations have seen steady territory reclamation across North America and Europe, escalating conflicts with rural livestock farmers. Instead of turning to lethal traps or firearms, ecological agencies are actively funding the integration of Great Pyrenees fleets onto open ranches. Because the dogs naturally establish impenetrable sensory perimeters, they successfully deter wolves and bears without harming them, serving as an irreplaceable biological bridge that protects human agriculture while preserving native apex predators. IN SUMMARY! The Great Pyrenees is a living relic of ancient pastoral warfare, engineered with the calm, independent psychological intelligence to stand down a wolf using little more than a fearless stare. Don't look down on them because they won't fetch a ball! 😂 Hopefully you've learnt something new today? Cheers 🥂 😅 The Medic Who Writes™🌚

If you ever get a Great Pyrenees know they don’t fetch. They don’t retrieve. If you throw a ball, they’ll look at you like “well that was stupid. Now you have to go get it.” They’re bred to go on a hilltop with sheep and watch them alone for days. So they expect that you trust them to make their own decisions. They enjoy sitting and observing, and patrolling. Then more observing. Then more patrolling. They like to sleep in places where they can see everything.

Jubilant scenes as Golden Fleece is led in by Susan Sangster following the colt's brilliant victory in the 1982 Derby. Pat Eddery claimed later in his career, that this horse was the best he ever rode. Sadly, he never ran again, so we can only wonder what he might have achieved

Taj Mahal equals years of planning, investment, and horsemanship. To show up at the @PreaknessStakes with a now local horse that was born and raised in Florida, he was originally trained in California and is now making a name for himself in Maryland. It’s incredible to be here with the Russell family and to see Brittany driving the sport forward and putting women right at the center of big-race days. A lot of people played a role in getting us here today, and for that we are thankful. Let’s all have some fun. @MrsRussell26 @NBCSports

Whenever you heard Ercel Ellis on Saturday mornings, 8 A.M. (and on the air w Post Time) you knew there was something unique about his personality, delivery & mindset when it came to thoroughbred racing. His knowledge of the history was unmatched. The final show of Horse Tales w Ercel Ellis from the Thoroughbred Center (outside of Lexington) aired on 1/3/26. There are more shows still available @630WLAP feed on Spreaker. 🎙️Final Horse Tales show - tinyurl.com/yfwbnzjj During the winter months, Ercel was always talking about getting back on the air. I didn't have the heart to tell him. However, he set a goal to return to celebrate Man o' War's birthday late March. Ercel, his wife Jackie and I made a plan for Ercel to celebrate MOW on the air. We dedicated a segment @SundayAMSports for Ercel to remember his friend, Man o' War. The next day I brought the audio to Ercel and we listened together. I saw a little tear run down his face. 🐴 Ercel on MOW @SundayAMSports (27 min mark) - tinyurl.com/3ch43ekr Ercel loved reading from Joe Palmer's "This is Racing." When he would finish reading he would look at you say "Isn't that good? I've always enjoyed Joe Palmer." Ercel still used a typewriter to type out copy to read, carried a flip phone, sent handwritten cards and notes through the mail. Ercel called. Never a text. We shared many laughs about technical issues and other topics. Ercel never missed a show. We would solve the tech issues, or pre-record a show if the weather was bad but Ercel never missed being on the air. @keeneland Magazine published a great feature on Ercel Ellis in 2017. A behind the scenes look at Horse Tales. Pics below. Ercel Ellis still had that racing history embedded in his mind up until the last few days. He smiled for the final time at me when I showed him pics from the Kentucky Derby. I miss Saturday mornings w Ercel Ellis. I miss my friend. They don't make them like Ercel anymore. The sunrise is not the same at the Thoroughbred Center without Ercel Ellis. #ErcelEllis #ThoroughbredRacing #HorseRacing #KentuckyDerby #ThePreakness
