I’ve never read the books, so I honestly have no idea what her character is supposed to be like. In the context of the movie I thought the actress worked fine. Maybe a little lightweight for that world, but I felt like she and Chalamet had good chemistry, and I bought her portrayal at the end. In that, I believed she had come to love Paul and wanted his best. She convinced me of a young woman watching a young man ruin himself and knowing there’s nothing she can do.
I get that Zendaya has seemingly been picked as the new “it girl” and subsequently dropped into everything, whether she’s a good fit or not. That’s Hollywood doing what it always does. As an actress, I think she is capable, though, and sometimes, pretty good. Doesn’t mean she’s right for roles that call for something else.
In short, I will likely never read Dune, but I’m enjoying the movies, and I don’t see her as an especial distraction, at least no more so than any of the other creative choices which often feel slightly modern or out of place.
