There’s a more sensible and moderate approach to addressing the currently perverse political incentive structure while allowing the general public to still have a voice on matters that have social considerations outside of fiscal policy (civil liberties and decisions to go to war for example). I propose a new bifurcated legislative regime where half of all seats get voted on by net tax contributors and the other half get voted on by the general population (citizens over 18). Both legislative bodies would still vote on everything, allowing the entire population to still have a voice, but with fiscal stakeholders having weighted consideration. We already have historical precedence for such a bicameral system. The pre-1913 senate and house were two chambers elected by separate voting bases — states via their legislatures and the other by the population.

Shopify CEO says a “good system” would give 0 votes to those who pay no income tax, while increasing votes for higher taxpayers, capped at 5.

Disenfranchisement doesn’t equate to tyranny. There are sensible forms of disenfranchisement that we already employ— such as citizen status and age. Allowing net-negative tax contributors an equal vote has led to perverse fiscal political incentives.

@micsolana It's just another way to disenfranchise those who aren't you just with a more fancy methodology.

Disenfranchisement doesn’t equate to tyranny. There are sensible forms of disenfranchisement that we already enforce — such as citizen status and age. Why the hell shouldn’t we disempower net-negative tax payers from voting for the government to steal from net tax payers? Do you understand anything about incentive structures?

@micsolana This is the most ludicrous and contrived spin. The bottom 60% of tax payers aren’t even net contributors. Sure, they pay taxes, but the benefit they receive from government spending far outmeasures their contribution.

@wolf_vukovic So prices have never been lowered by any business by improving efficiency and or reducing waste. Got it.

Here’s an economics law: If a grocery store wants to sell food 30% cheaper, one of only four things *must* be true: 1. Its suppliers are accepting 30% lower prices. 2. Its workers are accepting 30% lower wages. 3. Taxpayers are covering the difference through subsidies. 4. The store is operating at a loss, and will soon be out of business. Prices aren't actually 30% lower - they've just been shifted somewhere else in the system. Something that people have a very hard time understanding is that prices don't disappear. They allocate scarce resources. You can move costs around, hide them, or delay them, but you can't make them vanish. Having said that, let them do this experiment. They will destroy small grocers and produce food shortages. Perhaps people will learn a lesson then. Perhaps this failed enterprise will represent another nail in the coffin for bad ideas that never work? Yeah, right! 😂

This might sound pessimistic, but I’ve always wondered why NO billionaire has single-handedly funded the halting or reversal of climate change purely for the narcissistic thrill of being able to say they literally saved humanity.
