Thank you for your Question, The following are some of the reasons why some patients get to know they have cancer when its already late (why cancer may be diagnosed late). 1. Aggressive cancers, some cancers are very aggressive in nature thus have a very rapid progression making them difficult to detect in their earliest stages. 2. Non-specific symptoms, some cancers have non-specific symptoms identical to most common disease conditions in our communities making it hard to suspect these cancers. Forexample stomach cancer, esophageal cancer is most commonly mistaken for PUD “ulcers” and victims are always misdiagnosed for a long time allowing cancer progress. 3. Medical knowledge gap: some cancers require highly specialized medical professionals like Oncologists to suspect & detect yet not readily available. 4. Diagnostic gaps: Cancer screening is very expensive for majority people in developing countries and thus cant afford to do timely screening that would diagnose cancer in its early stages. Simillary, some cancers like pancreatic cancers lack effective specific screening tools for early detection. 5. Cancers are silent Killers, many cancers will not show early signs until they have progressed making it very hard to detect them early. 6. Knowledge gaps: Many people especially in Africa still believe NCDs like Hypertension, Diabetes & Cancer are attributed to spiritual life and thus see them as a curse, withcraft etc and opt to pray and fast in the fight against NCDs than seeking timely medical intervetion. NB: Cancer like other NCDs are silent killers, they oftenly do not send us timely warnings and thus routine early screening remains the best way to detect them early since early screening & early intervetions have shown good prognosis/treatment outcomes. In Uganda, ~80% of cancer patients report to Uganda cancer Institute with late stage cancer making it very hard to survive.

Autoimmune disease cases (where immune system of the body mistakenly attacks healthy tissues) are escalating everyday. They can hardly be avoided thus early diagnosis and treatment to avoid further disease progression and complications remain the way to go. Together we can help Mrs. Norah Atuhire fight SLE, Thank you.

With our current large Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs) burden, we continue the fight against NCDs by hosting monthly medical camps in different communities in uganda targeting Hypertension and Diabetes. Very little resources, very little efforts mean a lot to the underprivileged who can’t absolutely afford and access good healthcare. We screen and offer sustainable long term treatment for our Hypertensive and Diabetic patients. My team was very grateful today hearing the success stories about our initiative from the people of mityana district. Thank you @mavinehfocus, @Iconmedicare, @Nabukeerawinni4 & Hope Empowers Ministry.

Earlier today, @NewtonAllan6 fulfilled his promise to Rena’s mother. Rena and her mother visited Icon Medical Center in Bulenga, where she was tested and given all the necessary treatment for free. I just spoke to the lady and she still can’t believe what she calls the “miracles” that have happened to her in such a short time. Thank you so much, Dr. Alton, for using your profession and resources to serve humanity. This is the spirit that defines us. Thank you, UOX 🙏

Hypertension!!!! A silent killer in Uganda. ~1/4 Adult Ugandans have hypertension. ~Only 3/10 Ugandans with hypertension actually know they have the disease. ~Only 1/10 hypertensive patients on treatment have controlled blood pressure. Un controlled hypertension will Damage all your body organs including your heart, kidneys, liver, brain and your lungs. Check your blood pressure today.

I have a special visitor today; Mercilyn from Lira, Uganda, She survived malaria-induced Acute Kidney Injury with severe uremia last year after Peritoneal Dialysis. Today she returned healthy for her routine review. Moments like this remind us why we practice medicine. 🥰🏥🇺🇬
