@idkijustthibk Notably, The Vegan Society coined the term "vegan" and has used that definition since at least the 80s.

The most popular and mainstream definition of veganism that has been around for decades has “as far as possible and practicable” as a condition of avoiding harm towards nonhuman animals, and people still think we’re saying “disabled people in food deserts should go vegan”.

Elon had an absolutely immaculate public perception before the Thailand rescue diver stuff. It was very very common to just call him a real life Tony Stark. He also wasnt *too* much more cringe than the memes at the time either so people saw him as "A billionaire who gets us!"
Ali Alkhatib@_alialkhatib

i'm really just noticing how conspicuously widespread these references were for a short period of time. it came up in star trek too. did he pay a PR team to try to get his name in tv shows, or were writers just all organically doing this?

@ArtJbing You'd think someone lecturing how to mobilize a population would look at historical examples like Russia or China or Vietnam. It's not like every peasant had a dogeared copy of Capital but they were widely distributing pamphlets of basic theory.

it straight up never occurs to some people that there are some ideas that you can't really understand as a layman because they're too complicated. and it would be a bad thing to pretend otherwise and only pass down warped, extremely simplified versions of those ideas!
Coren ✒🎨@CorenLaVolpe

Truly intelligent people can describe complex ideas in a way that a layman can understand. Being verbose is intentional obfuscation to maintain their little "elite" circle.

@Skye_Melissax My high school girlfriend lived on a pig farm. Her dad ran it by himself, with my occasional help in the summer. Fruit and veggie farms tend to require a lot more workers

@Johntheduncan I wish this was true but since the "annoying vegan" stereotype was never really based on reality this will change nothing.

The cultural moment where "the annoying vegan" is a recognisable and legitimate target of ridicule is clearly over since self consciously non-vegan people are way more annoying and self righteous

@jan_dutkiewicz @F_Vaggi But there's a dozen replies providing objective proof that she's wrong, and her response is to lock the post. Lack of double-checking can't explain that.

@F_Vaggi I don't actually think so. I think most of the time is the rehashing of claims that have some degree of truthiness to them - emissions in transport, soy consumption - and not double checking. I think motivated reasoning is a second-order response to being challenged. My 2 cents.

The Billie Eilish vegan discourse is an incredible test of people's ability to do very basic research. Case in point: 1. Most soy goes to livestock feed, not human food. 2. Transport is a tiny part of any food's emissions. What is produced, not where or how, matters most.

Everything about her activism gives privileged homeschooler. The increase in demand for soya due to the rise in veganism is in part responsible for deforestation of the Amazon. Also, fruits and veg that are out of season and have to be imported, have high Carbon footprints.
