Ishan Kishan is a terrific cricketer who has just essayed an amazing international comeback. He has also made almost a 100 crores just from IPL fees, not counting international duty and endorsements. This cheque is not a 100th of what he has already made and he's not the greedy sort. So one can only assume this was literally a payout for a photo-op with him to ensure that the others in the picture got into the papers and all over social media. Obviously, why spend one crore of government money on creating facilities or training centres or bankrolling poor athletes when you can instead use it to create a photo op by paying the one of the few athletes from your state who really does not need the money! And that's why sport in India is where it is.

In a seminal essay, “The Absent Liberal”, Ramachandra Guha ventured that Indian liberalism “is a sensibility rather than a theory”, a contention affirmed in the late lamented CA Bayly’s Recovering Liberties. It has only taken two decades, but I finally have a rejoinder. We have been looking in the wrong place. Indian liberals did develop a theory—not for British India but for Indian India.

@sugataraju @arivalayam @BJP4India @INCIndia @TVKVijayHQ Sugata Sir is perhaps among the rare few in India who engages consistently with the normative while reflecting and reporting on the present moment in Indian politics. Very thoughtful, always decent, & sort of lyricism in the writing that comes from clarity and unpretentiousness.

My new piece: Vijay and the accidental inauguration of new politics in Tamil Nadu. “In the early years of MK Stalin’s tenure, people started identifying themselves as belonging to the ‘Dravidian stock’. It was a kind of odd race definition to counter characterize the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as belonging to North India, and by implication, to a different race. However, this race characterization of south India was limited to Tamil Nadu, and did not find much currency in other southern states. The rigidity they created around it was not exactly ingenuity but a shallowness of imagination. It was an exclusionary narrative that provoked a more universal and humanist appeal for the TVK.” Link to read: open.substack.com/pub/sugataraju…

@athreya49 True. But he chose this, so take it or... Needs to find his footing & fast. Find two sets: neutral efficient technocrats to implement his policies honestly to fullest extent & help navigate the system & 2. culturally rooted people with a functioning brain & decent local appeals.

@ImPawan_96 One of the problems for a mass leader without ideological movement backing is they don’t have a big pool of talent to draw from. Congress never had that problem and of late BJP also has a pool of talent for advice etc. But parties like ADMK, TVK face this issue.

@pranesh The persistence of this headline every season is the truest indictment of the education system in imparting basic literacy and numeracy. But what the hell happened to self learning and correction in these people.

1. This zombie headline, despite being wrong, will never die. 2. The Oxfam report itself contains a disclaimer (image below). 3. The Oxfam report is riddled with methodological howlers, so it couldn't make this claim even if it wanted to. Link to thread in the next tweet.

@athreya49 Truly despicable state of affairs. But in a sense very rational response if we consider self preservation as first priority (we’re the suckers falling for values, principles, nation, etc ). I say let Vijay go to the polls again& destroy d mfs by a bigger mandate &clear majority

Looking at this emerging DMK-ADMK, PMK-VCK & commies in a combo secretly blessed by BJP, am reminded of 1989 VP Singh govt that was supported by both commies & BJP. I also remember how that was one of the worst govts in Indian history as everyone put party & power before country.

This is the latest fun term in Pakistan.. "Hindu Zionists" (it does not mean they support zionism, though ofc many of them do, it means Hindus wanting a Hindu dominated state (without moving to some new homeland) is "Hindu Zionism". I kid you not :)
Yasser Latif Hamdani@theRealYLH

The whole idea of India (which is even today in population bigger and more diverse than the continent of Africa) as one country is based on Hindu Zionism no matter what lipstick secular Indians want to put on it. How? Ask any Indian secular or not and they will inevitably come down to the argument that Bharat Varsha was mentioned in the Vedas.

Almost every journalist I spoke to in the past month said that it was advantage TMC in West Bengal. Some even predicted a TMC sweep. Every academic I spoke to - those who have worked on West Bengal - said TMC was in deep trouble, BJP was very likely to win a sizeable majority.

Nobody is talking abt the biggest assembly elections win of congress in recent elections (2/3rds majority). That's their fate. They really need to do some good deeds & become nationalists again to gain some good karma #electionresult2026

@Satvik_Pen Whether we go services or labor/mfg intensive path, one generation (at least) is gonna left behind and suffer the pain. So design a palliative and make a decision. Leather/gems/clothes/elect etc are long identified sectors for labor intensive exports.
