@Im_SamB @Karai_Dan I mean in America alot of places are still 7.25 an hour. I'm not American but I do alot of construction gigs in such states and almost nowhere has a meal that cheap

They cant help themselves.
They don’t take into account that Japanese people don’t earn USD, and that these “full meals” are expensive for young people who live and work here. They can’t understand that money isn’t 1:1 between countries.

Japan has some of the cheapest food in the developed world and it's not even close so frankly I don't want advice from someone who can get a full meal out for like $5 USD and where absolutely everybody is eating out at restaurants constantly

@coliflowerz @Karai_Dan Well for me I’m lucky and my part time job doesn’t pay me Minimum wage I get a decent amount so it takes me less that. But yes if I was getting minimum wage it would be around 60ish hours

@Im_SamB @Karai_Dan So on minimum wage it would take you 60 hrs to pay off your rent. Avg in california is 2k USD. assuming min wage at 17, it would take 117 hours
this is not assuming splitting rent with roommates or anything, which is basically required here

@Im_SamB @Karai_Dan It's almost the same in america. In cali where i live, min wage is 17 ish, you can get a burrito for 10-12. But some states the wage is as low as 7.25.

@greatcolorsalad depends what the series is. if it's something obscure enough that you'd consume fan translations, then yeah. but mal a couple years ago decided to make the default title for nge "shinseiki evangelion" like anyone that isn't a performative tosser has ever said that in english

it's not "place, japan", it's literally how the internet operated 10+ years ago with manga and anime because majority of the translations were fan translations. but a 15yo wasn't online then to know this, i guess, and now it's "performative"

@Panchinster @writerofscratch Of course start with hirigana katakana after that vocab is big and maybe watch anki Andy on YouTube if you’re doing the genki books he has a pretty good series for it. Private tutor even 1-2 times a week is huge. Or find discords that have Japanese and English exchange

If you're good at Japanese pitch accents, maybe Dōgen will give you a thumbs up or whatever, but when it comes to making friends, rizzing up baddies, drinking at the bar with random strangers, and everything else that matters in Japan, you need grammar and vocabulary.

@Panchinster @writerofscratch Try listening to podcasts and maybe find a tutor for conversation practice. For me since living in Japan my studying has been less steady as it was in America but my Japanese has improved due to the amount of input output I do on a daily basis. I’ve learned a lot outside of class

@Karai_Dan I got really lucky with my バイト and get 2,000 yen a hour but it’s also a hour 20 away from home 😂. Japan is super cheap when you have USD it’s still livable with yen but not as freely as people think when they look at it with USD in mind
