@DavidAFrench Well, he heard it, David. It must be true. Ignore the fact that he didn’t believe it or possess the critical thinking or research skills to determine if it is true. He heard it. So he repeats it. I heard the Cowboys were going to win the superbowl this year.

This is wildly false, and it breeds a dangerous level of ignorance and wishful thinking in the American public. We'd have to make some hard choices (including making some very tough trade-offs) to come close to balancing the budget. Saying anything else is irresponsible.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Stephen Miller: "Based on what I've heard, we could balance the federal budget if the only dollars that went out of the treasury went to individuals who were properly, lawfully, correctly eligible to receive them"

@admcrlsn There was a moment post-Katrina when all support for GWB dropped out from under him even among R’s. I feel we are near that point

@richstarnes Not sure I would call Huffman any more or less of a normie Republican than Wambsganss. I doubt either one of them or you could identify one thing that they disagree on. Wambsganss is just more of a snake & has fewer principles.

Flash back to the first round of voting in November, the early vote made up 55% of the final vote, with Rehmet winning it 44.1-40.1 over Wambsganss. Election day votes made up the rest of the vote and Rehmet won that 51.7-30.8 over Wambsganss.

We are very much in upset territory in the Texas #SD09 (Trump+17) special election. Early vote just dropped: Taylor Rehmet (D)- 56.2% Leigh Wambsganss (R)- 43.8% Given that the early vote usually makes up a good chunk of the final vote, I think the Dems will win this one.

@LawyerCat_ A few years ago, I had dinner with a guy who’s a fire fighter/inspector in California. His family lived in Southlake, Tx & he commuted back & forth every couple of weeks. Southlake is one of the 5 richest cities in Tx. No government in employee should afford that lifestyle.

Just had lunch with a buddy who recently retired as the chief of a large municipal fire department. His pension pays him 100% of his final year’s salary each year. I ask him what he does now. “Golf,” he said.

@mattyglesias @admcrlsn 1994 is the last time any democrat won statewide in Texas (AG). In the history of Texas politics (when it was a blue state), the only people to buck the prevailing party trends were moderates with modest agendas.

There needs to be a better response to the collapse of trust in media than to say "this is how sourcing works, so it's either this or nothing." The public deserves media that it can trust, and that trust is something you earn.
James Surowiecki@JamesSurowiecki

"Don't believe any story with only anonymous sources" is tantamount to saying "We shouldn't have any inside stories about secret corrupt and/or criminal activity by governments or corporations."

Is there a specific reason as to why the Eternals didn’t connect with people? Ive heard people say its because they’re not the Avengers but are we forgetting Guardians of the Galaxy?

@GuyDealership This is so true. I have employee pricing with a major brand & went with my SIL to buy a specific SUV at a dealer. We had called ahead with the VIN & the process still took 2.5 hours after the test drive & wound up having to come back the next day to pick it up.

A recurring challenge at dealerships: “Hurry up… and wait.” vAuto data shows 40%+ of a customer’s time in-store is still “idle time.” Waiting on managers. Waiting on appraisals. Waiting for someone to pull a car around. The only way to win in customer satisfaction… Is to start by killing the wait. ___ Data from vAuto’s The Data Advantage e-book, check it out for dealership process insights → carguymedia.com/4o3Z0Zz | @CoxAutomotive

@jimgeraghty My engineer son graduated from one of the best engineering schools in the country and can’t find an engineering job. He works 2 part time jobs at the university he graduated from. I would say he is an unemployed engineer.

Met Cheney twice. Pre-VP. Really nice guy. Didn’t need to be. You can learn a lot about a politician by how they treat their staff. Maybe learn more by how they treat other people’s staff.

@SonnyBunch The only surprise to me is they are doing the fire part of the planet in this film rather than saving it for the last one. I assumed the 3rd film would be desert or snow & the magic substance earth needs would be krayt dragon guano & it is super fuel for ftl travel.

These movies are technical marvels and gripping on basic (like, BASIC, foundational myth) storytelling levels. I don’t begrudge them their success at all. But it is … funny … that Cameron is SO goofily invested in them.
Variety@Variety

#AvatarFireAndAsh is nearly three hours long, says James Cameron: "Big surprise!" Cameron made the film even longer after the original cut did not have Jake Sully reuniting with his Toruk bird: "I’m looking at it going, you know, I’m not that much of a genius screenwriter. There’s something a little off here in the storytelling. And so, our Toruk is back [in 'Fire and Ash'], right? You know, the big bird that Jake rides [in the climax of the first 'Avatar']. I’ve always been waiting for the question, 'Why doesn’t he just go get the big red bird and kill everybody like he used to do?' Because that doesn’t exist in 'The Way of Water' at all. It didn’t exist in 'Fire and Ash.' And I went, 'Oh, he’s got to go get the bird.' Come on! I was saving it for a later film. I was like, 'Fuck that! He should get the bird. Get the Toruk.' There’s something in Jake’s destiny that requires it, right? So I just re-wrote it, and we went back and we shot two or three scenes around that concept, and I threw some stuff out and stuck that in. And we’re at three hours, big surprise! But it works beautifully, and the actors were super-excited about that idea. It’s like, oh, okay, that feels right, you know?" @redsteeze It’s because the executive branch isn’t trying to inflict maximum pain on people to show they need the government & put pressure on the other party. Granted, this executive branch tries to inflict maximum pain on a daily basis.

And everyone knows why. Might be the first time in my lifetime that this guy and the Democratic Party have run into the Kobayashi Maru of government shutdowns. Now it's just totally low key, totally cool. It's like a chill dive you haven't heard of yet. Good shutdown vibes only.
