PSA: "The Alamo," the 2004 movie starring Patrick Wilson as William Travis, Billy Bob Thornton as David Crockett, Jason Patric as Jim Bowie is currently available for streaming on Amazon. I like the movie very much and I am surprised to see that it doesn't have great reviews on the various review websites. Many of the negative reviews focus on two things 1) Long stretches of oratory from various figures like Travis and 2) that it seems to take a long time to get to the crux, which is the battle itself. Paradoxically, those are the things that I, as a Texas history buff, like because they are truthful. What I like about the film is not only that it is pretty historically accurate but that it captures the boredom, loneliness, and dread of men waiting for two weeks for what they expect to be certain death, and also that it succeeds in taking those pop-culture brand names like Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie and making them human, showing us their flaws. In some ways, I think, the problem is that the arc of the Alamo story is itself a hard one for any filmmaker: Long days and nights of waiting, followed by a massacre. The movie shows all that and it's a bummer. But it deals frankly with the long wait and the deadly conclusion, by focusing on the characters of the leaders; it’s about what they’re made of, and how they face a bleak situation and all of this is 100% opposite of the John Wayne "rah rah Texas" version, which I also like, albeit for completely different reasons. I won't say too much more about it because I don't want to color any of y'all's opinions, which I'd like to read after you watch the movie or even if you've already seen it. The one thing I will say is to pay attention to the cinematography. A lot of the movie takes place at night, with illumination by candlelight, campfires etc... and its in those moments that the film really shines, finding texture and color and pathos in the long shadows at that time after midnight and before sunrise that the Scandinavians call The Hour of the Wolf. Anyway, Traces says check it out and let me know what you think.
