@DanFriedman81 @The_Nutscracker you’re underestimating what a “consolation prize” amounts to here. it’s a potentially unpopular political decision leveraged by savvy cajoling. he’a already endorsed and doesn’t hold any strong position against hochul but continues to eke out meaningful gains regardless

I think the pied a terre tax is fine, because you generally want to tax things you want less of, and NYC real-estate being used by foreign oligarchs to park money while housing is in short supply is something that is fine to disincentivize. It doesn’t change the fact that his entire agenda has failed, he’s made a bunch of enemies on the City Council, his favorability rankings are tanking and he’s acting like he’s achieved a huge victory because he is spending a grotesque $30 million to build one grocery store that will take three years to open. I am skeptical that this tax will actually raise $500m — you need $50 billion in taxable pied a terres in the city to achieve that. And there are not enough politically palatable sources of revenue to pay for all the new spending he wants.

Mamdani wanted an increase in the state income tax on high earners. He didn’t get it. He wanted an increase on the corporate tax rate. He didn’t get it. He wanted an across the board property tax hike. He didn’t get it. He wanted a transfer tax on home sales over $1 million and a new estate tax. He didn’t get it. The City Council and Albany rejected Mamdani’s entire tax agenda. As a consolation prize, Hochul gave Mamdani a 1% pied-a-terre tax, affecting only homes that are valued at more than $5 million and are not primary residences. The revenue this will raise covers less than 10% of the deficit in the budget Mamdani wants to pass. Mamdani is declaring victory.

So respectfully this is a pretty reductive take. Not saying Tolkien is uncancellable but there’s no way you’re comparing him to a character as mean & enthusiastically bigoted as JK Rowling. Cause yes Tolkien had views that were very much informed by his period & faith, but he’s…
Ian Harber@ianharber

Cancelling Harry Potter because of Rowling but remaking/doing spin offs of Narnia and LOTR despite Lewis and Tolkien being two of the most prominent Christian figures of the last century who undoubtedly share Rowling’s views she’s been cancelled for. Make it make sense.

@tonyhawktruther Eh, I’m fairly misogynist but I’ve seen enough men pull the daddy issues/no father card that this kinda seems like fair game now. To be clear, obviously neither side *should* be saying shit like this. The fact that we’ve regressed to this level of “discourse” is blackpilling.

@eli_enis It's a defense mechanism, whereby relatively affluent millennials can appear class-conscious or even cosplay some sort of lower class fantasy. When a food writer publishes "in defense of Dominos pizza" it's no different than Obama wearing jeans to a Ford plant

My least favorite millennial archetype is The Snobby Slob. A bohemian urbanite who treats mainstream American detritus (fast food, reality TV, dogshit pop/rock) as virtuous cultural entities worthy of critical re-evaluation. Shallow consumerism disguised as savvy contrarianism.

For a brief period I worked at a board game store back in the day. Owner and his wife wisely refused to stock Cards Against Humanity. And we happily told every person that asked for it exactly why. A surprisingly number of people were embarrassed. The rest probably just got it off of Amazon. But we were not going to aid and abet that nonsense.
Brendan Fraser Crane@bf_crane

Cards Against Humanity was such a terrible vibe back in the day. No creativity, ground the party to a halt. We can’t let Gen Z find out about it, confirms their every suspicion about millennials

to be clear, my exasperation is over the fact that this is obviously true of Tylenol and had been known a long time in the literature but if you said you didn’t want to give your kid tylenol doctors would have called you anti science like a year ago

Just went to the doctor for my kids sickness and they said, without any prompting, that Tylenol should only be used if absolutely necessary because it works by suppressing the immune system. I still cannot get over the fact that all these so called “experts” are just mindless, opinionless slaves who repeat whatever they are told to say without question.
