One month ago today, I had to put Buddy down. He was 11 years old, and we spent just over nine together. He'd been fighting cancer, living more than two and a half years as a tripod and taking chemo pills regularly, but the arthritis in one of his other legs is what did him in.

I don't really care if the security guard was an ignorant anti-Semite or that the leaders of this particular Mosque have a history of embracing extremism. There were kids inside, so I am thankful he acted to stop the shooters. This targeted attack was an act of terrorism. Something we can't accept in America. It was wrong when an Islamist extremist targeted a synagogue/school in Michigan a few months ago, and just as wrong today when these two lunatics targeted a Mosque/school. Parents shouldn't fear that kids going to school or families going to worship might not come home. Such places shouldn't need constant security. The normalization of such evil and hate only ensures further violence. Everything else is a different discussion.

This site is full of people who have strong opinions on bronze age Greeks when most of them have never been near one and clearly don't have the faintest idea what they do.

I absolutely believe Talarico will get 44% of the vote. The question is whether he can get 49%. I think it's possible as a good chunk of the undecided are probably Trump disapprovers, but that's really the big question.

A mileage-based fee, if it replaces current fuel-based fees, would help bring the funding of the Highway Trust Fund back in line with actual usage of the nation's roadways, which would be a good thing. There are implementation issues, including privacy concerns, with doing that.

The only thing I see from the bill summary that this might be is a 5-year pilot program to see whether mileage-based charges can replace fuel charges (e.g., the gas tax). If so, it's a bit of a stretch to call this injecting a new revenue stream into the Highway Trust Fund, imo.

@SeanTrende My impression then was that his being a Catholic Republican was the big thing, but I'm not Italian so I could easily have missed that angle.

It's hard to believe that Scalia was appointed to the Court in 1986 in part because the "Italian vote" was still an important thing to be courted. Don't get me wrong, it still exists, but these distinctions are fading, fast.
