@Info1234564 @EsotericCD @NRO It is irrefutable that we inflicted great material damage on Iran, but it is also irrefutable Iran took the United States and Israel's best shot and is still standing, and in a stronger position than when we attacked them, and that is a geopolitical catastrophe.

Some sunny weekend reading from the slough of despair, at @NRO: Who does Donald Trump think he's fooling anymore on Iran? This is a clownshow and a geopolitical disgrace. It's time to tell some home truths about the mess we're in.

@travisakers The US spends a lot on government services. They generally suck and act as money laundering pass throughs for the NGO and government employee portion off the D party's PMC base Taking more money in tax and giving it to the government to redistribute will not improve anything

@EWErickson Once the Mullahs were not overthrown after the Ayatollah was killed, and the IRGC decided to hold the world's oil hostage by closing the strait and firing missiles at everyone nearby, the economic costs of victory became something the American people would not bear So we lose

So Iran opens the strait, gets a fee per ship passing through, gets $10 billion in cash minimum up front, and we punt on nuclear terms till later. This is an American surrender to a terrorist regime sold this morning to various conservative outlets to cheerlead.

My favorite Garfield factoid is that because he was both ambidextrous as well as fluent in Greek & Latin, he did this fun parlor trick where he could translate a passage of English verse in real time using one hand for the Greek and the other for Latin.

@jasonwhitlock The whole controversy from this case comes from the fact that Karmelo was given $700,000 for committing obvious murder But there is no real, non-online constituency that believes he was railroaded or that there is some sort of riot worthy injustice here

Independent media should be showcasing how there's virtually no reaction to this verdict. I'm watching with my mouth wide open as Will Cain paints a picture like there's massive chaos outside the courthouse. There isn't. There are people with their cellphones out and 6 to 10 idiots providing them "chimp out" content. It's not a reflection of reality.

The death of the Royal Navy illustrates the "gradually then all of a sudden" principle. The bridge rusts by slow degrees and drops in a shocking second. You see this in very old people. Individual diseases crop up, each of which can be managed. But cumulatively the whole person is being transformed into a house of cards. The Royal Navy died in that way. With fewer ships they ran the few that were left harder. Recruitment fell and even new ships could not be manned. The shrinking service lost bureaucratic clout and sank ever lower. The British government let it live on its name till even the name was no more.

@citrinowicz When the initial and decapitation strikes didnt cause uprising or surrender, the operation could no longer quickly meet its goals We have the capacity to strangle and destroy the regime, but the American people will not accept any of economic pain necessary for that to occur

He’s blaming Israel for not simply letting Iran do whatever it wants, because he’s bored and wants to move on. The “ceasefire” was always just him walking away in boredom. The idea he was using it as some grand plan, 47-dimension chess was, as always, a fantasy.

My office has seen the devastating impacts this policy has had on my constituents since it started. People have lost jobs, healthcare, and been put in unnecessary limbo. Today a judge ruled what we have all known from the start — this pause was illegal and arbitrary. USCIS must start adjudicating immediately.

@willchamberlain Can't think in terms like this...what was our kill ratio in Vietnam? The Iranians took the advantage by closing the Strait and holding a gun to the head of the world The US could defeat them, but the people will not accept the economic cost The supply of oil is everything

This is one of those points that seems nuanced and sophisticated but is in fact just dumb. In six weeks of strikes we took less than 15 casualties. We struck five figures worth of targets with airstrikes and had one plane shot down. They didn't even capture the pilots they shot down; we were able to build an airbase in hostile territory, locate the downed pilots, and retrieve them without taking a single casualty in the op. The Iranian Navy is sitting at the bottom of the sea. Their Air Force is gone. Their senior leadership has been decimated. Their defense industrial base is mostly destroyed. So no, we were winning the war. The fact that Trump is letting the Iranians jerk him around diplomatically doesn't magically transform a dominant military performance into the opposite.
Conor Friedersdorf@conor64

@willchamberlain @LevittNicole7 No, you were misled into believing that we were winning the war by people you trust more than you should, and that is reflected in the ceasefire terms that the people who you falsely believed to be wrong correctly predicted.
