Amazon @PrimeVideo’s series Raakh (directed by Prosit Roy, written by Anusha Nandakumar and Sandeep Saket) is a textbook example. It takes the horrific 1978 Ranga-Billa case and deliberately injects caste and communal angles that never existed in reality.
In 1978, career criminals Kuljeet Singh (Ranga) and Jasbir Singh (Billa) kidnapped and brutally murdered teenage siblings Geeta and Sanjay Chopra in Delhi. The crime shook the nation. Delhi Police, led by Inspector V.P. Gupta with SI Ram Chander on the team, conducted a swift investigation. Bystander Babulal helped identify the killers by providing crucial descriptions. Journalist Prabha Dutt covered the case. Police Commissioner J.N. Chaturvedi oversaw the probe. The killers were convicted and hanged in 1982. There were no caste-discrimination or communal subplots in the actual investigation.
The series replaces these real people with ideologically convenient characters:
- Inspector V.P. Gupta is erased and replaced by SI Jayprakash Jatav, portrayed as a Dalit officer battling “institutional bias” (played by Ali Fazal).
- SI Ram Chander becomes SI Javed Murtaza, a Muslim officer.
- Babulal is changed to Saleem.
- Journalist Prabha Dutt is recast as Nisar, a Muslim woman.
- A new lazy Brahmin hawaldar named Mishra is added to push stereotypes against Brahmins.
This is not creative freedom. Creative freedom does not include rewriting documented history to manufacture a caste-discrimination narrative and cosy up to specific political verticals. It is calculated distortion, a pure leftist propaganda dressed up as “inspired by true events.”
The real victims and the actual officers who delivered justice deserve respect, not this contemptuous rewriting of their story to fit a pre-decided ideological script. Exploiting a brutal crime that shocked the nation for narrative-spinning is the lowest form of filmmaking.
History is being falsified in plain sight. Betrayal with the victims and real heroes who caught the criminals.
Shame on @amazonIN for funding it and shame on the Censor Board for approving it.

- जिस बाबूलाल ने बच्चों को बचाने की कोशिश की थी, उन्हें सलीम बना दिया
- इतने दर्दनाक भयावह ख़ौफ़नाक सच्ची घटना पर भी जातिगत एंगल के साथ घटिया नैरेटिव सेट कर डाला
- भीम मीम एंगल ही सेट करना था तो कोई काल्पनिक बना लेते
- बाद में 1982 में रंगा-बिल्ला को फाँसी दे दी गई थी।

हाल ही में मैंने Amazon Prime पर "Raakh" देखी। यह 1978 के गीता और संजय चोपड़ा मर्डर केस, यानी कुख्यात "रंगा-बिल्ला केस" से प्रेरित एक सीरीज़ है। सीरीज़ बहुत अच्छी बनी है, भावनात्मक रूप से झकझोर देने वाली है और कई जगह बेहद disturbing है, जैसा कि इस तरह की दर्दनाक घटना पर बनी किसी ईमानदार कहानी से उम्मीद भी की जाती है। इसकी एक खास बात 1970 के दशक की दिल्ली - कम ट्रैफिक, शांत सड़कें और एक ऐसी कम क्राइम वाली दिल्ली, जिसे आज पहचानना भी मुश्किल लगता है। उस दौर की दिल्ली को देखना अपने आप में एक अलग तरह की उदासी और यादें जगा देता है।
लेकिन Raakh सिर्फ एक क्राइम ड्रामा नहीं है। यह एक बड़ा सवाल भी खड़ा करती है! क्या वास्तविक ऐतिहासिक घटनाओं पर आधारित कहानियों में तथ्यों और पात्रों की पहचान बदल देना उचित है?
सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि असली अपराधियों की पहचान बदल दी गई है। वास्तविक अपराधी कुलदीप सिंह और जसबीर सिंह असल में सिख थे लेकिन सीरीज़ में एक को हरियाणवी और दूसरे को महाराष्ट्रीयन दिखाया गया है। यानी सिर्फ नाम ही नहीं बदले गए, बल्कि भारत के सबसे चर्चित अपराध मामलों में से एक से जुड़ी सामाजिक पहचान भी बदल दी गई।
सीरीज़ खुद को सच्ची घटना से प्रेरित बताती है, लेकिन कई अहम किरदारों की भी पहचान बदल देती है। असली जांच अधिकारी वी. पी. गुप्ता को "जय प्रकाश जाटव" बना दिया गया है, जिनके घर में फुले और अंबेडकर की तस्वीरें दिखाई गई हैं और पारिवारिक दृश्यों में जय भीम के नारे लगाए गए हैं। उनके मेहनती साथी का नाम "जावेद मुर्तज़ा" कर दिया गया है। वरिष्ठ पत्रकार प्रभा दत्त को "निसार" बना दिया गया है, जबकि बच्चों को बचाने की कोशिश करने वाले बाबूलाल का नाम "सलीम" कर दिया गया। दूसरी ओर, एक निकम्मे कांस्टेबल का नाम "मिश्रा" रखा गया है, अस्पताल के एक गंवार और गुटखा खाने वाले कांस्टेबल को "चौहान" के रूप में दिखाया गया है, आगरा के एक "सोलंकी" इंस्पेक्टर को रूखा और बदतमीज़ दिखाया गया है।
फिल्मकारों को रचनात्मक स्वतंत्रता मिलनी चाहिए, इसमें कोई विवाद नहीं है। लेकिन जब कोई फिल्म या सीरीज़ खुद को "सच्ची घटना से प्रेरित" बताकर विश्वसनीयता हासिल करती है, तब उसके मुख्य पात्रों की सामाजिक पहचान बदल देना सिर्फ एक मामूली रचनात्मक फैसला नहीं रह जाता। किसी भी ऐतिहासिक घटना को समझने में उससे जुड़े लोगों की पहचान कई बार महत्वपूर्ण होती है। अगर वही बदल दी जाए, तो आने वाली पीढ़ियाँ उस घटना को अलग नज़रिए से समझ सकती हैं। हालांकि filmmakers द्वारा किया गया ये नामकरण असल में deliberate होता है, intentional होता है; प्रोपेगेंडा की परिधि के आसपास घूमता हुआ।
यह सवाल सिर्फ Raakh तक सीमित नहीं है। अनुभव सिन्हा की Article 15 और IC-814 पर भी यही आरोप लगे थे कि उसमें अपराधियों की सामाजिक पहचान बदल दी गई थी। इस बात को कुछ आसान उदाहरणों से समझा जा सकता है। अगर Bandit Queen में फूलन देवी के साथ अपराध करने वालों की जाति बदल दी जाती, तो क्या वह फिल्म उसी ऐतिहासिक सच्चाई को सामने रख पाती? अगर 1982 के एयर इंडिया विमान अपहरण पर बनी फिल्म Bell Bottom में अपहरणकर्ताओं की पहचान छिपा दी जाती, तो क्या वह उस दौर के खालिस्तानी आतंकवाद की सही तस्वीर पेश कर पाती? अगर धुरंधर में दाऊद इब्राहिम को किसी अनजान तुर्की डॉन के रूप में पेश किया जाता, तो क्या ऐसी फिल्में भारतीय इतिहास का ईमानदार चित्रण मानी जातीं?
ऐतिहासिक घटनाओं पर आधारित कहानियों में कल्पना की गुंजाइश हमेशा रहती है। लेकिन जब कोई फिल्म या सीरीज़ वास्तविक घटनाओं का दावा करके दर्शकों का भरोसा हासिल करती है, तब पात्रों की पहचान में किए गए चुनिंदा बदलावों पर सवाल उठना स्वाभाविक है। मुद्दा सिर्फ नाम बदलने का नहीं है। असली सवाल यह है कि क्या इन बदलावों से दर्शक उस ऐतिहासिक घटना को अलग ढंग से समझने लगते हैं। अगर जवाब "हाँ" है, तो फिर वह सिर्फ मनोरंजन या नाटकीय प्रस्तुति नहीं रह जाती, बल्कि इतिहास की "नई व्याख्या" बन जाती है और इसके rationale पर गंभीर चर्चा होनी चाहिए।

A true chilling crime story , the Ranga - Billa case of Delhi , director Prosit Roy. The writers Anusha Nandakumar and Sandeep Saket chose to portray Ali Fazal's as a Dalit police guy , his assistant as a Muslim, the honest journalist as a Muslim woman, and the lazy hawaldar as a Brahmin. A deliberately done thing under the guise of ‘creative freedom’ & to cosy up to certain verticals ! Whereas in the real Ranga-Billa case, the chief investigator was VP Gupta, his assistant was Ram Chander, and the Police Commissioner was JN Chaturvedi. None of the caste or communal angles shown in the series were part of the actual investigation. This is how leftist propaganda works. An ultra important horrific crime given a caste twist & then the series claims to be inspired by true events distorting facts 🙄
