This narrative perpetuated by Kobakhidze and amplified here is a distortion designed to deflect attention from Georgian Dream’s authoritarian backsliding and their cozy relationship with Russian interests. 1. “Second Front” Myth: There’s no evidence to support the claim that Western governments or Georgian opposition parties pressured Georgia to open a second front against Russia. In fact, Western leaders have repeatedly emphasized stability and non-escalation in the region. This rhetoric is a smokescreen to distract from Georgian Dream’s failure to deliver on democratic reforms and Euro-Atlantic integration. 2. Bidzina Ivanishvili’s Role: Let’s not forget that Ivanishvili, widely seen as the true power behind Georgian Dream, has been sanctioned by the U.S. under Executive Order 14024 for ties to Russian malign influence. His government’s alignment with Moscow’s interests has been a far greater “challenge” to Georgia’s sovereignty and aspirations than any opposition party. 3. Anti-Opposition Propaganda: Branding opposition parties as “foreign agents” is a classic tactic of authoritarian regimes to delegitimize dissent. The United National Movement and other opposition groups are advocating for reforms, free elections, and a European future—not war. Painting them as a “party of war” is not only false but an insult to the Georgian people’s intelligence and democratic aspirations. 4. Reality Check: The challenges Georgia faces today stem from Georgian Dream’s deliberate weakening of democratic institutions, erosion of rule of law, and stalling of EU candidacy progress—not from any fabricated external pressure. The government’s pro-Russian tilt is what truly endangers Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic trajectory. The Georgian people are fighting in the streets for democracy, transparency, and a European future. Attempts to shift the blame onto Western governments or opposition parties are nothing more than a diversion from the real issue: Georgian Dream’s authoritarian drift and its betrayal of Georgia’s democratic promise.

Georgia’s 🇬🇪 refusal to fight Russia 🇷🇺 is the key reason for the regime change attempt in that country. In an interview with the media in late December 2024, Georgia’s PM Kobakhidze stated: “The main cause of the challenges that our state, in particular Bidzina Ivanishvili, faced is that we did not enter the war [against Russia] in February 2022 and did not open a ‘second front.’ After that, the main challenges began." This is not the first time he made this point. Kobakhidze also blamed the self-described Euro-Atlanticist party United National Movement, founded by the ex-President Saakashvili, and smaller satellite parties (now—the National movement) for essentially acting as foreign agents of Western governments, the “party of war,” pressuring Georgia to become another Ukraine. 🇺🇦
