Ray's article comes at an important moment, following the Government's announcement on children affected by parental imprisonment. At Children Heard and Seen, we believe one of the most effective ways to make this a reality is through schools. Schools are where children spend most of their time, where trusted relationships already exist, and where a simple check-in from a teacher can make all the difference. If concerns arise, schools are also best placed to respond quickly and appropriately. That's why we developed our Model School Policy on Parental Imprisonment—co-created with adults who experienced parental imprisonment as children, alongside education and safeguarding professionals. It provides schools with practical guidance to create safe, compassionate and parental imprisonment-aware environments where children feel understood and supported. A public body is told it is operating an illegal policy of housing biological men with female prisoners and its response is to carry on as normal. I suspect it then opens itself up to all kinds of legal action as women demand their legal rights be upheld.
