The US has today notified to the WTO its decision to introduce (Section 122) import restrictions taken for balance-of-payment (BoP) purposes. Other WTO Members may request a review of this notification under the 1994 Understanding on GATT BOP provisions. docs.wto.org/dol2fe/Pages/S…

Don't understand why another supply shock should affect the path of rates. Excessive focus on supply shocks as an explanation for pandemic inflation is a problem. Its causing excess fear from poliymakers today.

.@stuartareid knew early on he was interested in journalism and international affairs. After college, he wound up at the intersection of both, working as an assistant editor at Foreign Affairs magazine. He worked his way up to executive editor over the years as he edited—or as he called it, “translated”—countless articles, turning complex topics into compelling prose and digestible insights. Reid sat down with CFR to discuss the importance of good writing to convey global issues, and how he started writing his own stories. cfr.org/articles/how-i…

“If you look at the bilateral agreements that have been reached so far, they tend to be extremely one sided,” argues Marc Levinson, an independent historian and economist. “These agreements may not be very stable because it will occur to people in these other countries that these agreements are, in ways, quite disadvantageous to them.” 🔗 Watch the full conversation: on.cfr.org/4bORxuA

> be Donald Trump > win a cost-of-living election > immediately announce the largest tariff program in the last 100 years > spend the next year carving out those tariffs > “well at least the price of oil is falling” > launch war that instantly raises the price of oil

Delta CEO: fuel prices have doubled for airlines since the start of the war, and we are passing them on to consumers as higher ticket prices.

The two new Section 301 investigations are very broad: -Excess Capacity 301: 16 partners, 70.2% of imports -Forced Labor 301: 60 partners, 99.3% of imports That breadth suggests the goal isn't to address the issues at hand, but instead to recreate a sweeping tariff tool.

Refunds are not "windfall"-- they will return money that was illegally taken from U.S. businesses, and every business that paid tariffs is entitled to them. The government should not be telling businesses what to do with cash they stole from them.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

SORKIN: Would you and the administration encourage companies that had higher costs because of tariffs to seek a refund? I ask because I've talked to CEOs who are worried about retribution GREER: If I were these companies and somehow they get this windfall, they should give it as bonuses to their workers

"Investigations" with foregone conclusions that tariffs will somehow correct these problems. Looking forward to reading the justifications for maintaining higher costs on American companies and consumers.

Scoop: USTR is set to announce new 301 investigations today into excess industrial capacity, forced labor, digital service taxes and other issues, as the administration works to replace tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court. With @tylerpager nytimes.com/2026/03/11/bus…

Toldja: "Globalization is proving resilient" bloomberg.com/news/newslette… The data's "a counter-narrative to politicians and analysts arguing that economic disengagement and the formation of new, distinct geopolitical blocs are happening in any seismic way" Twas always a silly idea.

Here's a fun fact: The United States now has fewer manufacturing jobs today (12.573M) than it did in March 2018 (12.576M) when Trump first started his tariff wars: BLS data: bls.gov/charts/employm…

Several have pointed this one out, but it's another clear indicator that Section 122 tariffs do NOT encompass a common trade deficit. The Senate Finance committee report notes that it intentionally used the term *payments* to differentiate the section from *trade* deficits.
