Kicking thing off in 2026 has me reflecting on my career across multiple digital transformations in tech: - Client/Server in the 90s: Building Windows apps in Visual Basic, Powerbuilder, Java, or Delphi for the enterprise that talked to backend databases like Oracle or SQL Server. - Internet+Web in the 90s: The Internet allowed us to break out of enterprise LANs and gave us access to a global network. Web browsers like Netscape and Internet Explorer and servers like IIS and Apache facilitated app development with tech like HTML, JavaScript, Active Server Pages, and ActiveX along with Java Applets and Servlets - Mobile in the 2000s: The smartphone revolution where my partner Darren and I built the Netperceptor mobile device management platform and had our first exit. Then years of building Windows Mobile and Windows Phone at Microsoft while teaching developers how to build mobile apps with the .NET Compact Framework, SQL Server CE, and Silverlight that utilized various Azure services via ASP.NET Web APIs. - IoT in the 2010s: Designing Azure IoT at @Microsoft to connect all the world's things, Lumada IIoT + Asset Avatar Digital Twins at @Hitachi to connect and model industrial things like factories and bullet trains, and finally Thunderstruck at @Ericsson to bring IoT to agriculture and empower farmers with data. Lots of advanced analytics and machine learning along the way to deliver actionable insights. - AI in the 2020s: With the power of the Transformer and reinforcement learning, we're having great success with deep learning in a way that's changing the world. With large and small language models (LLMs + SLMs) we now use chatbots, code development assistants, and now agents that carry out tasks autonomously. Using Claude I completely recreated Twitter for fun and I've been using it to improve older systems I've built as well as rapidly develop new ones. I'm now a 1000x developer. I hope everyone has an amazing 2026 and I'll see you at @CES this week.
