@TrvpLxrdnSVne @MacticsG1 @Skarrow9 Maybe a bit entitled sure but I wouldn’t say egregious for players to want to enjoy the max of something they bought. You make a fair point though that Bungie did warn us about the challenge. Buyer beware I guess.

@JB_Ratel @MacticsG1 @Skarrow9 That still sounds like an egregious level of entitlement though. I know players hate hearing this, but they either need to git gud, or they need to move on. Bungie told players what this game was. They don’t have a right to demand challenge be removed for their experience.

When did people start hating challenge in video games? I feel like back in the day challenge was seen as cool and fun and something many looked fondly at even if they themselves couldn’t beat it Now anytime something is hard its seen as unacceptable…

@MarkBadMan @PaulTassi I think you could argue with the repeated live service failures that Sony doesn’t currently have a good grasp of its customers or at least the market. Something in that range does seem off

@JB_Ratel @PaulTassi That only works if the company that buys you doesn’t understand its customers. For this to be true you would have to see other examples. Such as buying the next Star Wars.

Thanks. It’ll also be interesting to see how many players go back to D2 once they actually bring it back in from the cold and then what the retention is like afterwards. I’d fear people kept playing D2 for the habit of it but this seemingly poorly executed break from the game may have broken that habit.

@JB_Ratel @PaulTassi Yep I would say that’s a good reading of the situation. I doubt Sony would have paid $4bn+ for D2 alone. It was the promise of multiple live service games that would have lured them in, and I doubt they forecasted D2’s deterioration or the cannibalisation effect of Marathon.

Agreed that it doesn’t entitle you to the rewards, but if your game is so gatekept that accessing the best content to play is beyond the majority of players, then you should do so knowing many are going to lose interest. That I suppose comes down to Bungie’s goals for the game, but accessibility does increase interest.

@JB_Ratel @Skarrow9 respectfully paying for a game doesnt entitle you to access all of its gear and items just because I pay for a WoW expansion or sub doesnt mean i get to demand mythic raid gear i pay for the opportunity to play and earn the gear. whether or not im successful is up to me.

@HireDoll @PaulTassi If they had a "control" pvp mode just so people could enjoy the guns, shooting and practice their movement and builds with no risk, I'd be all over that. It wouldn't have to have any rewards attached to it per se, just a chance to try stuff out and enjoy the game play.

@JB_Ratel @PaulTassi I bet they wanted to launch with closer to 150k peak on steam - I just don’t think this was a realistic expectation given the niche genre Wonder what the game would be like if they had a small pivot and made an arena shooter on the side, kinda like crucible + COD create-a-class

@Ziegler_Dev idk man its feels incredibly shitty to find out you just barely get access to a quarter of the game so significant reviewers were asked to hold off until its launch based on what days you work irl

Cryo and Ranked are coming and we're excited to see players battle it out over Tau Ceti and traverse into the big scary moon-like ship in the sky. We've put out a few posts about Cryo, poured through the variety of comments and feedback we've seen so far, and wanted to take some time to explain some of the initial decisions we've made around Cryo and Ranked with regards to weekend scheduling. So without further ado, here's what we have been thinking: We are of course always iterating and are open to looking at other options in the future, but the Ranked/Cryo Archive weekend decision is really built around three points: - Preparing: We acknowledge that players will lose a lot of gear on Cryo and Ranked because it is intended to challenge you to your limits. As a result of that, it's important that Cryo and Ranked feel like an event you can schedule towards, grind gear up to do, etc. The loop of spend time grinding gear to spend it in Cryo or Ranked is reflected in this choice as a weekly cycle. - Economy Talk: We have some great rewards on Cryo that kind of break the bank when it comes to economy and power gain. If we were to look at having it open all the time, we'd probably have to adjust how frequently you can earn these rewards so that we don't flood the game with amazing loot all of a sudden. - Logistics Time: Cryo and Ranked both have entry requirements (gear ante) that are built around the idea of you matching with other players on an equal investment level. They also both have a high level requirement to ensure you've experienced enough of the game to understand the challenges inherent to the game. This inherently makes the amount of people in that queue at any time unpredictable. Both of these experiences also need a consistent flow of players in the queue to make sure matches are full to retain the challenge. To reduce the match times and allow players to find matches quicker, making it a scheduled event means more players will show up during that window and feed the queue pool better. We also acknowledge that there are likely some who cannot participate on the weekend or are excited about the experience and want to no-life it for weeks, and we appreciate that. We'll be looking into what we can do to retain these considerations and potentially accommodate this in the future. Things we may iterate on in the future: - Staggering Ranked and Cryo queues more so they overlap less - Looking at changing the days we do either Cryo or Ranked - Changing the ante values of Cryo or Ranked - Looking at any other conditions (solo experience, crew fill experience, etc.) and iterating on it! Marathon is an evolving game and part of evolving is seeing how this initial launch plays out and adjusting as we go =). Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming and we'll update you when we figure out the next evolution.

@PaulTassi @Forbes All of those reasons have some legitimacy but imo the #1 is Bungie’s erosion of good will. “We’re listening” was an excellent response at the beginning but it turned out very few decision makers were actually listening, hence why it’s now a meme.

Oh yes probably not original but true enough I think. I genuinely wonder what’s on the table for their next move. How much can they logically invest in the next expansion and what the realistic increase in the current player base is. Double? Triple? More? That’s still under 40k players and I can’t believe that is enough to pay the bills

@PaulTassi If Shadow and Order doesn’t have a positive impact (lasting more than a couple weeks before player count returning to todays level) I’d wonder if the max the next expansion could muster would be in the mid to high 20,000 range
