Has there been an awe-inspiring, "how did they possibly do that" movie on the level of Jurassic Park since Jurassic Park? Before that there was obviously Star Wars. People could argue Matrix or Avatar, but I still feel like those were just a big step up, as far as VFX, but not a complete revolution. Maybe Toy Story?

Did Rian Johnson really have any other choice? JJ Abrams wrote a story in The Force Awakens built off of the MacGuffin that Luke Skywalker had disappeared. An apprentice had fallen to the Dark Side, and that led Luke to go off to a place no one could find him. So, what could Rian have done differently with Luke Skywalker when he set out to write a consistent story that builds off of The Force Awakens?

@TheChrisLambert A movie can be visually symbolic and still feel psychologically thin. Symbolism and externalization are not automatically deeper just because they’re less explicit. Sometimes direct dramatic exploration of psychology is the deeper approach. And Batman Begins probes that better im

The Batman is the better film. One thing Nolan doesn’t really do in a meaningful way is convey character interiority through mise en scene. He’s so audience-focused that his visuals are usually chosen for their cool-factor moreso than their artistic meaning. Usually when he has a nice visual, that’s all it id. As opposed to Kubrick where the nice visual is almost always tied back to some theme/idea/character externalization. An example of externalization is Apocalypse Now, where you see an increasing loss of order and civilization the closer the characters get to Kurtz. It reflects their own internal loss of civility and morality. The only time Nolan’s ever really utilized this technique the way others do is in Inception, where everything that happens is really just a figurative demonstration of Cobb going through the grieving process. Externalization and a figurative plot are two of the aspects that tend to define the “better films” from the rest. Look at how Kubrick used the Overlook Hotel to externalize Jack relapsing and descending into an alcoholic mania. In The Batman, Riddler served as a foil for Bruce. Both are orphans who want vengeance. By confronting Riddler, Batman’s actually confronting his own inner demons. And Riddler’s plan to flood Gotham becomes symbolic for Bruce’s rebirth. The water washes away the anger he had felt for so long. And thus he’s ready to leave his inner darkness behind. That’s when we see Batman in the dawn of a new day…aka externalization. That framework is way more advanced than anything happening in Batman Begins. You could try arguing there’s some externalization with Scarecrow’s drug affecting perception and so Gotham sees in symbols (ie: Batman looks like a giant bat), but it’s way less clean than what The Batman’s doing. Batman Begins isn’t a dumb movie by any means. But it tells more than it shows. The Batman shows more than it tells. The Batman is the “better” film.

@TEBerry2 @grucciflipfl0ps It’s because they are all passive reactions to the events around him. Bruce is the protagonist taking action and driving the story forward. He is the passionate character shaping the narrative. Superman is little more than a bystander in his own movie.

@grucciflipfl0ps I don’t agree. I think we see him take action. We see him do these things, and of course he isn’t forced to, but they’re never framed as “choices”. We’re never really given the alternative or him contemplating one. The only two I recognize from the film are when he…

I think I finally realize WHY ppl think Man of Steel isn’t an emotional film or that Superman isn’t an emotional character. Clark does care for Earth and its ppl. He smiles. He worries. He saves ppl. But the film doesn’t clearly communicate what’s emotionally at stake.

Gladiator 2 definitely has my favourite ending for 2024. It makes me feel the same way I did with Top Gun Maverick but maybe to an even greater extent. Coincidentally both films driving force is how much we all miss Tony Scott.

@DukeSG1010 @Darren_Mooney Yes, we can all draw our own conclusions based on what is presented but that’s not what we’re debating. We’re looking to glean what is Nolan’s POV. And for a lot of movie his movie doesn’t provide much and that leaves some people wanting

@JBeaans @Darren_Mooney Thats kind of the beauty of the movie because it assumes youre emotionally intelligent enough to make the obvious judgement. This is the Walter White problem again. A moral person should be able to understand and engage things from an amoral ones point of view and see em as wrong

If you want to get a sense of what Nolan thinks of Oppenheimer, the character, notice that (no fewer than three times) he ignores his children crying and screaming. Given the sole virtue of many of Nolan’s heroes is their desire to get back to their children, that says it all.
crescens@crescenswings

The somewhat popular read of Oppenheimer (2023) on here that he's somehow supposed to be shown in a sympathetic light is very silly to me. Maybe if you only watched it once I get it but

The director's cut of Napoleon is so much better than what was theatrically released. Sometimes executives need to shut the computer off, forget about the algorithms and actually WATCH THE FUCKING MOVIE. The space to breathe actually added context, which, in turn, improved the film. It's the difference between the 2 hour version of The Godfather Coppola was initially browbeaten into making and the final classic everyone loves. Not saying that this is Ridley's "Godfather", but what was previously omitted improves it.

@WeWatchedAMovie Disingenuous framing. Just make your own alien movie that doesn’t constantly remind the audience of past movies. The first 40 min or so of this movie did a good job of that. Then it went down memberberry lane

@mcuban Bud, you assume there will be no change to home prices. Which is idiotic. Home prices will change. Likely by the same amount of more than the subsidy. Look at what happened with college tuition and healthcare costs when subsidized. Did they stay the same?
