Last week, Penn contested Research Associates and Postdocs’ petition to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) seeking a vote on whether to form a union. This resulted in a pre-election hearing at the regional NLRB office. Here's some of their claims...

This is Scott – a CDC researcher working to help screen coal miners for black lung.   His entire department was eliminated last week, leaving miners across the country at greater risk of sickness and death. I’m fighting back.

WE WON! This week, over 2000 Penn grad workers cast ballots. After eligible votes were tallied, the final count was 1807 to 97. It's official. The majority of eligible voters turned out to the polls. Penn graduate workers have resoundingly declared: WE WANT A UNION AT PENN!

@OleksiiShandra @jdpereira Wealthy universities should be able to cover these increases through central funds (billions in endownments, etc) but they will hem and haw about how that isn’t possible (it is). Decreasing overhead costs for PIs would also solve part of the issue.

I agree with adjustment to state/city living cost. Still question is: where should the funding be coming from? Are universities going to join the effort to bring brilliant postdocs or individual PIs are supposed to bring several grants to hire postdoc? Because the funding budgets are not increased and pay lines keep being cut down.

I’m puzzled about the end-goal for postdoc salaries in academia - are we aiming for industry-level six figures? While higher pay in industry is undeniable, job security there often hinges on fluctuating business needs (I have a lot of friends who were let go for reasons not related to their performance, but rather entire branch was let go), unlike academia’s relative stability. Postdocs in academia tend to have more job security, funded for years within grants and are let go only in exclusive circumstances. If universities want to boost postdoc salaries, more power to them, but if it’s on individual PIs to manage this from multiple grants to fund a single postdoc, it could mean fewer postdoc offers and we are back to square one, having lots of PhDs but not enough research opportunities for sustainable career. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m sorry but it’s pretty hard for individual PI to compete with industry corporation in providing a 6-figure salaries for entry level…

New data released by the U.S. National Science Foundation underscore concerns that the academic community is facing a postdoc shortage and that early-career scientists are increasingly favoring higher paid positions outside academia. @ScienceCareers scim.ag/6nW
