A federal immigration agent waved a gun at a house yesterday in Joliet, Illinois. The agents jumped a fence onto the property. I’m told there was a toddler inside the house at the time. The agents took one person.

UPDATE: On day 4 of massive hunger & labor strike at Delaney Hall ICE prison in Newark, NJ, Reps @Analilia_Mejia @RepMenendez @SenatorAndyKim have arrived and are inspecting. Last night ICE tried to move one of the strike leaders Martin Soto. We were there as protesters successfully blocked the ICE van from moving him. ICE lied to Martin-telling him he was being released before handcuffing him and tossing him into van.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation's Milwaukee branch rallied people to oppose the project, citing how the neighborhood had seen little public investment but would get a data center.

Fast local organizing got the city of Milwaukee to pull a proposed data center from consideration. The proposal was scheduled to be presented to the city's plan commission on Monday, but it was removed from the agenda today after local groups pushed back hard.

The ultra-wealthy are waking up to the fact that most Americans want controls placed on their ability to whatever and whenever they want with little debate. So now they are hoping to change the conversation to the temporary construction jobs the projects create.

The community note here is correct, though I think it also needs its own note to point out the upward pressure this will have on electricity rates.

BREAKING: US data center construction spending jumped +34% YoY in March, to a record $50 billion annualized rate. Spending on data centers is up +437% since the beginning of 2021, when the annualized rate stood at ~$9 billion. This is also up +688% since the start of 2018, when the annualized rate was just ~$6 billion. Meanwhile, office building construction spending fell -9% YoY in March, to $46 billion, the lowest since 2015. This means that spending on data centers now exceeds office building construction by $4 billion, or +9%. To put this into perspective, office construction spending exceeded data center spending by $65 billion, or +650%, in 2020. AI is fundamentally transforming the US economy.
