UN Special Rapporteur @FranceskAlbs gives a fierce and insightful speech to our @LeidenLaw students and engages in Q&A. Thanks to the students for being here, to @giulia_pinzauti for the moderation and to Rick Lawson for hosting this on the occasion of Int'l Human Rights Day

Appalling European vote count at last night's UNGA. Despite talking about importance of international law viz Russia's invasion of Ukraine, only 7 European states felt this legal right also applies to Palestinians. Shockingly 10 voted against ICJ referral, including UK & Germany.

We welcome news today that the @ICRC believes new legal rules are needed to respond to the moral, legal and humanitarian concerns posed by autonomy in weapons systems. This significant development inspires hope that a new legal reality is possible. bit.ly/3hlOiz5

Today, 19 years after the establishment of the #Guantanamo detention centre, we call for the urgent closure of this place of #torture, #arbitrariness & #injustice, the very existence of which is a disgrace for the #UnitedStates & the #InternationalCommunity as a whole.
United Nations Geneva@UNGeneva

Independent human rights experts appeal to the new #US Administration to immediately close the #GuantanamoBay detention centre. "The very existence of this facility is a disgrace for the United States and the international community as a whole." is.gd/A08ENv

While the #EU #ArmsIndustry profited from over 15.3 bn € in arms sales to #SaudiArabia and the #UAE between 2015 and 2019, Yemenis suffered airstrikes and armed attacks with devastating consequences. Help us to stop this injustice & sign our petition 👉 bit.ly/3p9duJO

Any use of internationally banned #landmines is unconscionable so it's disturbing to see that an armed group + affiliates fighting for control of the capital #Tripoli resort to these coward's weapons - @hrw hrw.org/news/2020/06/0…

„Dieser Krieg ist keine Tragödie, er ist ein Verbrechen. Und die, um die es jetzt gehen müsste, tauchen allenfalls als politisches Druckmittel auf: die Menschen von Idlib, die vor verschlossenen Grenzen ausharren und nicht zurückkönnen“ schreibt @AliceBota zeit.de/2020/11/syrien…

I wrote a final goodbye. I sign out today after 5 years in Beirut with an impossibly heavy heart as Syria faces its greatest tragedy yet. It's hard thing for journalist to acknowledge, looking back on a body of work, to realise it has had so little impact telegraph.co.uk/opinion/2020/0…
