The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit has arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the viral hijacking of an Uber driver in Soweto. According to JMPD, officers acted on a tip-off after footage of the hijacking circulated widely on social media. The suspect was traced to a residence in Zola 3, Soweto, during an operation conducted on Sunday. Police said the suspect matched the description of one of the men seen in the video and was immediately arrested at the scene. Investigations into the hijacking and the possible involvement of additional suspects are continuing. JMPD Commissioner Patrick Jaca commended officers for the swift coordination and response, saying the arrest demonstrates the department’s commitment to protecting e-hailing drivers and passengers from violent crime. The arrest comes amid growing concern over attacks targeting Uber and other e-hailing drivers. JMPD said law enforcement agencies will continue to intensify efforts to ensure those involved in hijackings and related crimes are brought to justice.
