True gold: So tough to lose that awesome game; but this moment when Calgary team-mate Tkachuk brought Johnnie Gaudreau’s daughters and his jersey out to celebrate the gold with the team was awesome. It’s everything being on a team is about. Best picture of the Olympics

🇪🇺 On 29 June 1985, European leaders chose a symbol that would stand the test of time. Twelve golden stars in a circle. A powerful symbol of who we are and what we stand for: unity and peace, democracy and solidarity. Today, we celebrate 40 years of our common flag.

Canada’s “51st state” military strategy What’s worse than being trolled as the 51st state by Americans? A federal govt that sends a clear message to the world that is exactly what we are. This week the PM was in Europe and delivered another Ukraine speech no one listened to. - To our NATO allies; Canada has become that cheap dinner party guest that stands up and gives a long-winded toast to everyone’s health, but never, ever sticks around to help pay the bill. We are a running joke in international security circles for self-righteous speeches followed by… nothing. - The Russians and Putin smirk when the Canadian PM declares he is “…unequivocal on standing up against Vladimir Putin’s illegal, immoral, unjust violations of the international order” - while his submarines and ships openly traverse our territorial waters with zero fear of Canadian intervention or retaliation. Canada talks about the international order but won’t pay for it. We give self-righteous speeches, but make our allies - particularly American taxpayers - pay for our deadbeat status on NATO, NORAD, AUKUS, Five Eyes, naval/Arctic strategy, and energy and mineral security. (While we simultaneously waste $50 billion on bankrupt EV battery plants...) 2. Yesterday, CAF announced new lowered-entry standards for an already deeply understaffed, underequipped and demoralized military. - We are 16,000 recruits short with morale at 34%. A DEI-obsessed general staff desperately hope that being “inclusive” or ignoring health issues will fill the void of their lack of vision, strategy and command. Won’t work. - Canada is now a rounding error. We have 67k active troops & 5k in reserve, including cooks and janitors. The USA has 1.29 million active troops and 700k in reserve. Their Special Operations Command is larger than our entire armed forces. That is not proportional. The world is a more dangerous place, but Canada is acting like it is on a vacation from history that the US has to pay for. It’s ridiculous to expect Russia or NATO or the USA to respect our sovereignty if we don’t actually care enough to invest in it ourselves. A wake up call is coming. Canada needs to re-build the military and intelligence infrastructure, staffing, strategy, equipment and capabilities that will make our enemies and allies respect us once again. Self-righteous overseas speeches and lower-standard HR inclusivity announcements don’t cut it anymore. If we don’t want to be called the 51st state, we have to stop acting like it. #CAF #ukraine #cdnpoli

The tariffs aren’t coming today. Thank Premier Smith for being in DC this wknd actively making the case for avoiding a tariff war by sitting down with the Presidents closest advisors. You can see her at galas and at the embassy. My friend Andrew Coyne thinks this is appeasement. I think it’s committed diplomacy. She’s making a clear case, not selling out. And where are the feds? Who are they meeting with? I’m at the Inauguration with some friends who will serve in the new Administration. I’ve been at some receptions and galas a conversations about Canada and tariffs always come up. Yesterday morning the Trump team delayed tariffs and made it clear again: they are about getting Mexico and Canada to solve for border security. In private people say Mexico is preparing a clinical response to the border/drug issues and Canada is MIA except for Premier Smith talking about energy security. Here’s what else I’m hearing: 1. Virtually no one in D.C. could tell you who or what the federal Canadian is doing to fix the broken border and the security, military, trade and the NATO freeloading issues that are the basis of the original tariff threat. The state dept guy said we are notorious for our security problems now and tolerance was fading. 2. Premier Smith is making friends and influencing people. She is focused on direct conversations with the Presidents closest advisors who will decide energy and foreign trade policy including Bergum, Rubio and Wright. Canadian Fed naysayers meanwhile aren’t here, preferring to talk tough on CBC while she’s taking open interviews on Fox and defending Canada directly with Cabinet members. 3. Canada’s leadership vacuum is obvious. No one here understands how a PM can resign & suspend a democracy for three months so his party can have a leadership race. 4. The American priority is security: economic, border, Arctic and NATO. Anyone in Cdn politics who wants to talk tough needs to explain how we will actually fix our broken borders and weak national security. - CTV/CBC, needs to ask every idiot repeating that ‘everything is on the table’ ask them how they will convince the US we are fixing the broken border & our reckless asylum, visa and immigration fraud that invited our growing extremism and criminal and terror syndicate activity to explode. How will the Feds guarantee the Americans they won’t interdict another 1000 watchlist terrorists (90pc+ of all US terror interdictions) in the next few years? I’d love to hear what Joly would say to the state dept guys I just had brunch with. Because their critique of our national security posture is devastating which is why the Americans are intrigued to know how we will fix our immigration/asylum/terror/crime/security/law enforcement issues. 5. While the feds have no coherent messsages or presence on the core security issue Premier Smith is actively addressing energy security with an all-Canada argument: - that our energy is key to US energy security - that they get it today as a discounted input to thousands of jobs and hundreds of billions in U.S. value-added refined and traded goods - when the energy trade is deducted from all other sectors, the Americans actually enjoy a trade surplus with Canada of over $50 billion. Great argument and if you check the video below she makes it clear. So here’s a question for the feds: She’s actively meeting and explaining energy economics to defend against tariffs on all Canadian goods. So what exactly are you doing? The tariff threat isn’t gone just delayed to see progress on the border. Maybe it’s time to get to DC and start talking to US media and the White House instead of trying to take cheap shots on CBC? It’s a much tougher crowd down here. You’ll need real answers. But it would be the right thing to do for team Canada, our economy and our security. Danielle can show you the ropes. She’s a team player. Just doesn’t stay on the bench… 🇨🇦

So, watching the fantastic opening of the Olympics in Paris , I could not...not reflect on the importance and impact of the element of our collective athletic competition which must celebrate excellence and diversity Should we not discuss "different" abilities vs "dis" abilities.

So funny. I love Scotland. My mother was a Campbell. Need to go back. During a U2 concert in Glasgow, Scotland, Bono asked the audience for total quiet. Then in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands. Once every few seconds. Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies." From the front of the crowd, a broad Scottish accent pierced the quiet: "Well f#ckin' stop doin' it then ya evil b#stard!"
