@dessielclark @robertschueller Yep I saw my ex slave away as an "adjunct" for years making similar crap wages. But once you've taught the same course, you can coast. And if you use pre-canned resources from the $200 textbook they FORCE the students to buy, the curriculum and even grading is done for you.

@robertschueller @dessielclark What? I easily spend 1-2 hours of prep and grading for each in class hour. And then you have mandatory office hours, which are usually 3 hrs per week. So 1 class is more like 9-10 hrs a week, min. And you have no benefits and you’re not going to have a job after 16 weeks.

@dessielclark A class. Ok so lets do the math on A class. I assume that class is 3 hours. 3x 18= 54 hours. In class. That equals (adding in grading and prep) 104 total hours. (I was super generous here and assume you get 2x time). Over 18 weeks. You worked somewhere around 6 hours a week

@_Eric_Reinhart I’m wondering if you could point me to research about the over prescribing of antipsychotics in prisons. I’ve, unfortunately got some colleagues who are skeptical.

@FromPhDtoLife Absolutely not. I can think of plenty of people who contribute far more to society than academics such as doctors, surgeons and nurses.

Myth: Academic jobs are morally, ethically superior to non-academic jobs. What say you?

@ambernoelle I’ve spent adulthood trying to un-toughen myself and stop pushing through or ignoring feeling sick after doing so repeatedly and getting much much worse many many times. It’s tricky territory and I’d err on believing her.

As a former health intervention researcher, it's always fascinating to me to see how much ppl need to experience a problem through their own five senses to "know" it exists. My FB friends (highly educated folks, & some are psychologists) have apparently gone 3 yrs w/o any... /1

@DALupton I've kept mask mandates in all my classes - I'm the only academic in my School at Uni who does. I'm seeing so many of my students with multiple rounds of CVID because they're not masking anywhere else!!!

@KaufmanBooks @chantz_y This is one of the most vexing things about masking—it telegraphs that something is “wrong” with you. For me, having an invisible illness for the last 30 years, it now being visible…sucks

@chantz_y Or you can ask them if they are pregnant or if they take viagara. "Oh, sorry I thought we were having a conversation about personal medical information". (But I don't get asked except once-that will be 2/2).

@Data_logical0 @Bron_Wild @DALupton No shit. I have an incurable lifelong disease diagnosed at 10. I take meds but I guess it’s a fools errand. I eat vegetables, exercise, & don’t smoke—to lower my risk of getting more diseases. I don’t want more! We know how to lower risk, so I do. Personal responsibility right?

@ambernoelle My dad bought some tickets in my name for a fundraising raffle not really knowing what it was about. I won! I won a pin ball machine from a roller skating rink in about 1985. It came and was put right in our den, huge yellow green and orange. It vanished when my stepmom moved in

@FromPhDtoLife I do jobs that are fairly interesting and challenging, align with my morals, and pay well—academia not required!

I really wish PhD students and academics weren't convinced that working outside academia is lesser than. This faith is still engrained in academic culture, in most disciplines, it seems. What say you? (I want to be wrong in my assessment.)
