#ICYMI from @FBISanFrancisco: Seven Chinese executives and four of the world’s largest shipping container manufacturing companies were indicted for conspiring to restrict the output of — and fix the prices of — nearly all of the world’s standard unrefrigerated shipping containers. The multi-year conspiracy roughly doubled the prices of standard shipping containers between 2019 and 2021, increasing the container manufacturers’ profits approximately one hundredfold during the COVID-19 pandemic and global supply chain crisis. 🇨🇳🇹🇼 China is holding up a Pentagon under secretary's visit to Beijing as leverage on the pending $14 billion Taiwan arms package... Per the FT, Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby had discussed a possible summer visit to Beijing. China signaled approval depends on how Trump proceeds with the Taiwan arms package. Beijing is applying the framework Trump publicly handed them. He told reporters at the summit he was holding Taiwan weapons "in abeyance" as a "negotiating ship" with China. The response was immediate: tying a senior Pentagon official's visit to Taiwan policy progress. Colby is one of the prominent China hawks in the administration, advocating Pacific prioritization over Middle East entanglement. Keeping him out of Beijing limits hawk influence while Iran negotiations drain U.S. Pacific bandwidth. The leverage architecture works because Trump publicly built it.

🇹🇼🇺🇸 The most underrated story from Trump's Beijing trip is what he said about Taiwan, not what he actually did... His exact words after Beijing: "President Xi probably liked that you haven't approved the weapons to Taiwan. No, I'm holding that in abeyance, and it depends on China. It's a very good negotiating ship for us." This is China's biggest decades-long ask. Trump delayed Taiwan arms sales. He negotiated Taiwan's defense with Beijing, something the U.S. has never done before. He made it all public. Even if Trump never actually delays the weapons, the public declaration has already shaken Taiwanese confidence in U.S. support. Beijing's strategic goal is getting Taiwan to surrender peacefully rather than wage a costly invasion. The fastest path there is convincing 23 million Taiwanese the U.S. won't show up.

Today is my last day being 32. On the eve of every birthday, I ask myself: Did I work hard enough this year? Is my resume even longer than the year before? Am I creating a legacy so people actually remember me when I die? Did I help change the course of history or better other people’s lives or the state of my country? Then I make a list of everything I did over the year because each year, I strive to accomplish double what I accomplished the year before. People will say a lot about you when you die someday but don’t ever let them call you lazy!

31 years ago this week, China abducted a six-year-old boy. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima had just been recognised by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama - one of the most sacred figures in Tibetan Buddhism. Three days later, Chinese authorities seized him and his entire family. He has not been seen since. He is now 37. The world still doesn't know if he is alive. China must release him. This is one of the longest enforced disappearances in the world - he is a political prisoner - and he must not be forgotten. #FreeTibet

This man is an illegal alien from China, but he was delivering a speech yesterday in San Gabriel City Hall, in Chinese, demanding the City Council to cancel the recent waste management contract — on behalf of all Chinese residents of San Gabriel. He came to the US illegally 3 yrs ago, initially he was selling cars to illegal immigrants, then he started selling Spicy Soy Pancakes on streets without a business license, earning $10K-20K monthly, never paid tax. He had been arrested for illegal business operation, but the local police didn't send him to ICE, knowing he entered America illegally, released him. He is an Internet celebrity on Chinese social media with half million fans, and a beacon of successful overseas Chinese by getting around American laws. His goal is to run for LA Mayor in 3 years. This is no joking. The woman standing next to him is his campaign assistant. One of his goals is making Chinese the official language of his city. In fact this city hall is helping him achieve his goal by allowing him to make a speech during the council meeting in Chinese language. His TikTok handle is laxiaotang, he is currently looking for a business assistant. You can find all his successful stories by searching keywords 洛杉矶卖酱香饼的小唐 on Google

Yesterday was the 31st anniversary of the disappearance of the Tibetan religious leader known as the Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima.  Days after the Dalai Lama recognized this child as an important future Tibetan Buddhist leader, Chinese authorities disappeared him and his family.  He was six years old.   Chinese authorities should immediately release Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his family and stop persecuting Tibetans or others in China for their religious beliefs. state.gov/releases/offic…

The CCP kidnapped the Panchen Lama 31 years ago this week in its tyrannical campaign to dictate Tibetan Buddhism by controlling the succession of the @DalaiLama. This assault on religious freedom has only intensified under Xi Jinping. As the Panchen Lama turned 37 years old this year, the CCP should provide proof of life and immediately release the Panchen Lama. hindustantimes.com/cities/chandig…

my take on the deepseek hiring discourse: i haven’t seen official proof that they avoid non-chinese-background candidates, so i won’t state that as fact. but deepseek does appear to be built almost entirely by people trained inside china’s university system. that’s interesting. i did my undergrad in china and later received academic training at stanford in political communication, so i’ve seen both systems up close. china’s education system is not great at producing eccentric founders or rebellious geniuses. but it is extremely good at producing large numbers of disciplined, technically solid, high-baseline people. the us system is almost the opposite. it is excellent at producing leaders, founders, and extreme outliers. but it also filters ordinary and poor people very aggressively. if you are rich or obviously gifted, you get attention. if not, good luck. so maybe the real distinction is: america produces a smaller number of very sharp outliers. china produces a huge number of a-grade operators. for ai, both are important. but people underestimate how powerful the second machine becomes when the industry needs massive execution, research density, infrastructure, and productization.

Eric Schmidt should’ve stopped mid-speech and said: “Fine. Boo AI. But make your next Preply class Chinese, because the civilization cheering this stuff is not waiting for you to finish your campus struggle session.” China’s grandmas are lining up to install AI tools. Chinese developers are shipping open-source models like their hair is on fire. Their public is overwhelmingly positive about AI (83% feel positive about the future while in the west we are circling the drain around 30%). Their companies are moving fast, copying fast, improving fast, innovating fast, deploying fast. And in America? Our most educated children boo the mere mention of the most important technology since electricity. Why? Because our AI leadership class has spent three years doing the dumbest possible PR campaign in the history of technology. One half of them tells everyone AI will kill them. The other half tells everyone AI will take every white-collar job in 18 months. Then the closed-model cartel runs to DC whispering that ordinary people cannot be trusted with powerful open-source AI, that the future must be locked behind a handful of corporate APIs, safety boards, export controls, permission slips, and East India Company monopolies. And everyone acts shocked when the kids hate it. You told them AI means unemployment. You told them AI means extinction. You told them AI means no future. Then you walk onto a graduation stage and say “AI” and wonder why they boo. This is what strategic suicide looks like. The country that taught the world to love computers, the internet, open source, startups, hackers, builders, weirdos, tinkerers, and permissionless innovation is now teaching its children to fear the next platform shift. Meanwhile China looked at AI and said: deploy it, open it, copy it, improve it, integrate it, normalize it. We looked at AI and said: regulate it, monopolize it, catastrophize it, litigate it, protest the datacenters, ban the open models, blame every layoff on it, then act mystified when the public thinks it’s a demon machine. NIMYBs are moving from blocking housing to blocking datacenters. The same folks that stopped nuclear, the cleanest energy we have, are now joining hands with the NIMYBs. The hard right nationalists in Bannon and the hard left socialists in Bernie are joining hands in a new American party with mad Max Tegmark spending billions to terrify children about AI. Wonder what they'll call themselves? Maybe the National Socialists? The West does not have an AI capability problem. It has an AI civilizational-confidence problem. And if we keep telling our kids that the future is something to boo, don’t be surprised when the future answers back in Mandarin.

“Today in the United States there are only 188 US flaged merchant ships and 105 Navy @MSCSealift ships. WE NEED MORE THAN THAT In fact the Chinese have over 11,000 merchant ships,” said @SECNAV Hung Cao in today’s senate hearing. The days of the US Navy ignoring the US Merchant Marine and ocean logistics are over. “We need them to thrive as a nation,” He also provided clarity on @MSCSealift hulls ordered in foreign yards and said he will require that those overseas yards invest in the United States which will create 540,000 shipyard jobs for Americans.
