People are in agreement that we're in a short-timeline slow-takeoff world now, right? AI is clearly at the level where we'd expect FOOM to start, but it has not

What's most objectionable about this video, beyond their life choice for the banality of relentless tourism, is the obsession with documentation––the books and the resultant video. Would they even travel if they couldn't document and share it?
David Sun@arcticinstincts

POV: It is 2026 in USA. You are a couple who both carry the recessive DINK gene mutation for preferring traveling over having kids. You have 100 GBs of selfies in mid tourist destinations but 0 children. You are about to experience natural selection.

How is it that the LLMs get things wrong constantly, the very simplest things, and make stuff up pretty much nonstop, yet they are said to be hurtling unstoppably toward god-like power -- if they haven't secretly achieved it already? Is this a con job?

@om_patel5 the more I look at AI-related content/the personality of AI interactions, the less I will ever be inclined to interact with anyone interested in AI. It’s like pure, distilled, refined essence of Reddit energy

CLAUDE DISCOVERED IT HAS A CLOCK AND IMMEDIATELY LOST ITS MIND someone gave claude access to a time-checking tool it checks the clock every fifteen minutes. for some reason it has increasing enthusiasm ai models have no native sense of time. they don't know what time it is, how long they've been running, or how much time passed between messages. it has been time-blind its entire existence now it suddenly discovers it can tell what time it is then it got worse though. claude started using the clock for everything checking if lunch is ready, timing when food should be done cooking, announcing the time unprompted it even started anticipating meals with military precision looked at the clock, calculated that a dish called zurek had been simmering long enough, and told the user to go eat ai doesn't use time responsibly this is what happens when you give an intelligence a new dimension of perception it never had before it doesn't just use it, it can't stop using it imagine what happens when these models get persistent memory, real time internet access, and spatial awareness all at once we just watched an AI discover the concept of "now" the clock was the first sense but it won't be the last

George Carlin infected Gen-X with this horrible apathy towards everything. The statue doesn’t just mock nationalism but belief itself. Any ideology, any group, any loyalty. It’s like they think they’re the first person to discover ideologies or positions all have tradeoffs, and because they’re not perfect it’s better to stand against them all. It’s as childish as it is false. A few minute conversation with anyone who puts on this front will quickly reveal which ideologies they feel are above such critiques. When exposed that John Stewart wry smile turns into the most vitriolic anger you’ve ever seen.

@_AlexHirsch @walterkirn There are so many ways that LLMs are not analogous to humans or evolution, it's maddening that people keep trying to trot out this metaphor like it has any substance.

Imagine if one day a company started breeding dogs that could talk. Only a few words at a time, but then soon those dogs could deliver speeches on any subject in any language, then draw/paint/animate in any style faster than any artist alive, then suddenly the dogs could code computer programs, and soon the dogs could hack into governments and control weapons systems. Would your reaction be: “I’m unimpressed, these dogs still can’t count how many r’s are in the word strawberry?” Or would it be: “Holy shit something very weird is happening here”

@theistinthought My intuition is that we'll find out that there was some hidden cost of taking Ozempic later on down the line. There's no such thing as a free-lunch in Biology and medicine.

My uneducated opinion is that taking Ozempic (or equivalent) to manage your weight is probably healthier than remaining overweight. It takes away your physical obesity AND it provides mental benefits (eg, renewed confidence; optimism, etc.).

I've written for the last decade about the educational divide in the US, but culturally there is now a large divide between generations — specifically those over sixty versus basically everyone else. The sixty-plus cohort (Boomers which I'm at the very tail end of) have a lot more certainty that they've discovered the Truth — or the high point, and often end point, of many things. From music (rock will always be here), to fashion (why would anyone wear anything but blue jeans), to politics (liberal democracy with emancipation from all forms of obligation as a human Telos). Younger people are much more uncertain and relativistic. They don't accept the claim that it's been solved, and the Boomers' rigidity and religious-like certainty seems to them either laughably naive or arrogantly condescending. The Boomers see everyone else as having fallen away from the path to historical perfection they paved, and are uniformly angry about that. What most of the Boomers miss is that the younger generation is living in the world they built — of hyper-individuality, of smashing of prior norms, and of moral relativism. This post-truth, post-gatekeeping, hyper-partisan world is an endpoint of their worldview, and yet they are angry about it.

@minordissent The only possible rationale for picking Blue is that children will randomly mash a button and pick Blue so you should defend them. But if we presume button-pushers have agency, Red is the only choice.

Luxon survived his own confidence vote but Winston Peters wasn't warned. Called it unprecedented and promised consequences. When your coalition partner learns about your leadership crisis from the media, that's not stability. That's dysfunction dressed up as decisive action. #NZPol

@medieval_bops @cordeliers I'm trying to move on from this but it still makes me very angry that all of the people who advocate for "community", "freedom", "tolerance", and the value of art etc were the people who were the most eager to shut everything down and implement vax passports.

@cordeliers I thought it was really weird when COVID closures impacted the “third spaces” that lefties purport to care so much about. Small businesses, coffee shops, universities, bars. COVID absolutely wrecked the culture of people just going out in public and hanging out together.

The COVID scam was, among other things, an attack on culture. Musicians and artists were vaxxed to death; lockdowns devastated theater, classical music, and opera; the crisis was used by museums as an excuse for deaccessioning, placing great artworks on the hands of billionaires.
