Recently watched @louistheroux’s Netflix documentary Inside the Manosphere, and along with seeing a few other viral characters in the “looksmaxing” community couldn’t help but think how sad it all is. Scripture particularly warns against vanity rooted in pride. Pride precedes ruin, and arrogance of spirit leads to downfall (Prov 16:18), while God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Nothing — not a single thing — should be done from selfish ambition or vanity, but rather through humility, considering others superior to oneself (Phil 2:3). Though the “looksmaxing” community masquerades as a masculine movement, I can’t help but read scriptures’ warnings to women and their preoccupation with looks to be relevant to the group. The Bible is clear that charm is deceptive and beauty is vain, but the woman (or in this case men) who fears the Lord will be praised (Prov 31:30). Adornment should not be external elaborate hairstyles, gold jewelry, or fine clothing (dare I add jaw/hairline and muscular silhouette) as discussed in 1 Pet 3:3–4, but rather inner character. The Pharisees practiced their works to be seen by others, loving the best places at banquets and greetings in the marketplace (Matt 23:5–7), illustrating how vanity corrupts spiritual practice. God told Samuel not to look at appearance or height, because while humans see the exterior, God sees the heart (1 Sam 16:7). The wise, strong, and rich are warned not to boast in their accomplishments (Jer 9:23–24), redirecting glory toward God alone. I’m reminded this morning to pray for the lost, poor, and dangerously and unfulfillingly sad figures at the head of these particular movements.

The time for political correctness is over. America needs to WAKE UP and BAN Sharia Law.

What a great night at the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundations Aspire Gala last night in Baltimore. MD. I got to spend some time with my buddy Billy Ripken and talk with one of my heroes Cal Ripken Jr. I met all the Ripken children including @ryanripkenshow who is a great guy! I got to see my old hitting coach Jim Rice and chat with Andre Dawson. I also talked with Harold Baines and congratulated him on his Hall for Fame induction. I, respectively, disagree. My confidence that John the Apostle wrote the Gospel of John is low. Here's why: The four Gospels were written anonymously. They were not attributed to specific authors until over a century later. The Gospel of John is written in sophisticated Greek. John the Apostle was a Galilean fisherman who would be unlikely to produce that type of writing. Maybe not impossible, but unlikely. I agree that the author (or authors) of John are likely referring to John the Apostle when mentioning the “beloved disciple.” But that doesn't mean he wrote it. I think it's possible that it was written by people who followed the oral traditions of John. But here's where it gets difficult: when people start writing down what Jesus said. I couldn't remember verbatim what anyone had told me this week. If Jesus' words were spread orally for decades (we all assume, right?), it's difficult to think any of the direct lines from John could be accurate some 70 years later. And there's an argument that the line that you mentioned -- "Before Abraham was, I am" -- is a callback to Moses ' conversation with God. I actually just read about this two weeks ago. The Gospels used the Septuagint, right? So the translation of Moses' conversation goes from "ehyeh asher ehyeh" in Greek to "ego eimi ho on" in Hebrew. The Abraham line from Jesus, which is only in John, goes something like, "Before Abraham was, ego eimi" when you split the Hebrew and English. Is the line a callback to the authors using the Septuagint? I'm not sure. But I found that theory interesting as an explanation of why the line never appears in the other Gospels. Again, just a possibility. Paul's letters, to me, are the most reliable because they were the earliest, and there's an overwhelming consensus that he wrote at least most of them. That said, I don't know exactly what Paul is saying in parts, like "appearing to the 500." Where was this? Who were the 500? Why doesn't anyone else mention this event? Very interesting conversation. I could talk about it all day.

Took the wife and kids to see Project Hail Mary. We all really enjoyed it. Its greatest achievement is that it’s an actual family movie. Not too babyish for adults and not too grown up for the kids. Reminds me of the PG movies they used to make all the time in the 80s and 90s. Very much a spiritual descendent of ET. Maybe Hollywood will take the hint and start making real family films again. It also kind of reminded me of Ad Astra, which is a massively underrated masterpiece. A slower film, more adult oriented and contemplative. That and Arrival are the best space/alien movies of the past 15 years. Project Hail Mary is probably in the top 5. I’d rank it higher than Interstellar.
