In my first for @WarOnTheRocks, I argue that while we are not witnessing the opening stages of a significant expansion of NATO in the Indo-Pacific, if managed properly according to clear & realistic expectations, deepened Japan-NATO cooperation can effectively enhance deterrence.
War on the Rocks@WarOnTheRocks

“Japan and NATO would benefit from a renewed emphasis on public diplomacy, a commitment to burden-sharing on economic security, and increased information sharing,” write @JadaCFraser and @Ryangirlsname. bit.ly/3SQAIGg

Highly recommend this Tokyo Review essay by Helen Cecile on why energy security is the missing link in Japan’s defense strategy. As NSS revisions loom under PM Takaichi, the piece asks whether Japan’s plans are truly sustainable in a crisis.
Tokyo Review@TokyoReview

Japan’s defense strategy assumes stable energy access—but what if that assumption fails? Helen Cecile argues that upcoming NSS revisions under PM Takaichi must integrate energy security to ensure Japan’s defense plans are operational, not aspirational. tokyoreview.net/2026/02/the-en…

Highly recommend this reflective new piece by my former boss & Georgetown prof, Ambassador Kurt Tong. A sharp look back at a 1995 proposal to rethink U.S.–Japan relations—and what 30 years of strategic, economic, and political change revealed about alliance management.
Tokyo Review@TokyoReview

What happens when a bold U.S.-Japan policy proposal meets 30 years of history? In a new essay, Amb. Kurt Tong, Managing Partner at @TheAsiaGroup, revisits his 1995 call to “revolutionize” America’s Japan policy—and how the relationship evolved since. 🔗 tokyoreview.net/2026/01/the-di…

I wrote about Martha Layne Collins and the quieter work of subnational diplomacy for @TokyoReview. It’s a personal piece, framed by reflections from my Dad. My thanks to @JadaCFraser for her editorial care, and to @kenmoriyasu for the inspiration.

Kentucky’s first female governor helped secure one of the most enduring pillars of the U.S.–Japan relationship—far from Washington. In a moving new essay, @DuncanBarron reflects on Martha Layne Collins and the quiet power of subnational diplomacy. tokyoreview.net/2025/12/rememb…

Proud to publish this piece in Tokyo Review. @DuncanBarron’s essay on Martha Layne Collins is a reminder that some of the most consequential U.S.–Japan diplomacy has happened far from Washington—driven by trust, personal commitment, and local stakes. A must-read.

Proud to share this excellent Tokyo Review piece by my friend and longtime classmate @danspinelli902. A sharp look at why Takaichi’s Taiwan remarks matter most in Taipei, not Beijing or Tokyo.
Tokyo Review@TokyoReview

Taiwan is back at the center of Sino-Japanese tensions. PM Takaichi’s remarks on a “survival-threatening” Taiwan scenario sparked fury in Beijing—but the audience that matters most is in Taipei. Read more from @danspinelli902 here: 🔗 tokyoreview.net/2025/11/the-mo…

"If the United States hopes to rely on Japan as a pillar of the Indo-Pacific order, it must match Japan’s sense of urgency", @JadaCFraser writes in her analysis on the changing dynamics of the US-Japan security alliance. tokyoreview.net/2025/11/why-ja…

💯 @JadaCFraser @TokyoReview "Japan is recalibrating—from reliance to 'indispensable partnership,' from beneficiary to contributor, and from incrementalism to accelerated execution. For policymakers in both capitals, this means treating Japan not as a dependent ally that will follow the U.S. lead, but as a rising strategic actor increasingly aware of its own agency and the constraints on its partner. If the United States hopes to rely on Japan as a pillar of the Indo-Pacific order, it must match Japan’s sense of urgency with sustained capacity, clarity of direction, and alignment of strategic intent." tokyoreview.net/2025/11/why-ja…

How many more times will I have to text friends & former colleagues asking whether their jobs still exist? Whether those civil servants & FSOs I have WITNESSED dedicate their lives serving the American people & in service to a better, safer & more just world were callously fired?

I strongly condemn today’s personnel actions taken at the State Department. This is cruel and unacceptable treatment for American diplomats who have dedicated their lives to serving our nation and promoting our values. Mark my words, the adverse impact on our national security and our diplomacy will be far reaching; this will be Secretary Rubio’s legacy. To my colleagues and friends leaving the Department, I thank you for your service.

Thinking today of the men and women of the State Department — Foreign Service and Civil Service. Their dedication to serving the national interest and the American people is second to none. It was the privilege of a lifetime to work by their side.

From “priority theater” to “focal point of US foreign policy” to Nathan Fielder levels of management solutions. The repercussions of eviscerating our diplomatic & intl aid corps promise dire consequences tht will ripple across the region/world long after this admin leaves office.

Secretary Rubio fired State HQ's entire ASEAN team while he was in Malaysia, attending the ASEAN meetings they prepared for him. Glad he liked the meetings, though.
