Last week I got a Signal message purporting to be from Signal Support, asking me to verify my account. It seemed sus so I deleted it. Today I learned several human rights activists opposed to the CCP also got this phishing attempt and then got hacked. Beware and be aware.

We're grateful for the solidarity of our American partners. ICYMI, Beijing pressured countries along President Lai's flight route into revoking overflight clearances ahead of his visit to Eswatini. As @SenatorCurtis notes, this is part of a broader effort to limit Taiwan's engagement with the world. But clearly, Taiwan's friendships are not so easily severed.

China’s tactics to pressure nations into isolating Taiwan are a stark reminder that authoritarian regimes don’t just restrict freedom at home, but seek to control it abroad. A world order led by China is one where movement, speech, and other basic freedoms would be limited for adversaries of the Chinese Communist Party.

On April 7th, Premier Cho Jung-tai called for tighter legal oversight of Taiwanese political leaders’ contacts with Beijing as KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun began her China trip, warning against “nonresistance or inaction” in the face of PRC pressure. The Cabinet’s proposed amendments to the Cross-Strait Act would require disclosure of contacts with Chinese political and military figures, while DPP lawmakers said the rules should also cover party leaders even if they hold no elected office. focustaiwan.tw/cross-strait/2…

Cheng Li-wun's trip is a good example of why @pumashen wants the Cross-Strait Act amendments extended to party leaders. She holds no office, but tries to exercise real political authority over cross-strait relations, and the proposed disclosure requirements won’t touch her.

This morning, four U.S. Senators, two Democrats and two Republicans, began a bipartisan trip to Taiwan, where they are set to meet President Lai Ching-te as well as KMT officials. Senator John Curtis (R-UT) stated to the FT that the visit's timing is linked to Taiwan's effort to pass a special defense budget, as well as concerns about the Trump administration's support for Taiwan. The congressional delegation is also expected to visit South Korea and Hawaii to meet with INDOPACOM officials.
