Yesterday I was in a supermarket in a small Aussie country town and watched as a frail, unsteady elderly man on an old walking frame surreptitiously scooped up a small pile of loose individual grapes from under the bagged-up grapes in a box and quietly put them in his pocket for later, and I thought a lot about how in a rich, privileged country like ours it’s so completely fucked on every possible level the disadvantaged can no longer easily afford to buy themselves fresh produce.
