@econcallum @StefanFSchubert I'm surprised -- why are people thinking of moving from the US? I'm also writing from the US! In tech adjacent fields UK salaries are *significantly* below their US counter-partners, usually by a factor of 2x, and most my colleagues are horrified by UK salaries.

@StefanFSchubert @JamesDCWatson From the perspective of the US, I assure you that the exact same conversation is happening in the opposite direction. Ditto with Canada. People are generally fed up at the moment!

@StefanFSchubert I don't disagree! But I also think the UK is uniquely vulnerable in this sense! The UK is *so* culturally/linguistically aligned with the US that moving to the US isn't culturally very hard. Couple this with a 2x real salary increase, and suddenly moving to the US is attractive

@JamesDCWatson I see, thanks. I lived for ten years in the UK and know about the downsides. But I also think it remains attractive (e.g. since it's the only big English-speaking country in Europe).

@StefanFSchubert I'd say about 40% for Cambridge and about 60-70% for UCL. Most leavers went to the US. Of the people who stayed from Cambridge, both work for hedgefunds, and those who left for the US work in a mix of finance/tech. The UCL graduates are mostly working in tech/academia.

For various commuting local Hamiltonians, including (defected) Toric code which has non-trivial topological order, we map the task of designing fast-mixing quantum Gibbs sampler to the task of classical Gibbs sampling 😇 arxiv.org/pdf/2410.04909

I'm honored to receive the 2024 Kirwan Prize from @UofMaryland for research on quantum simulation algorithms. Many thanks to my collaborators on this topic over the years, especially @yuansu_umd who made deep contributions to the analysis of product formulas.

As a bonus, we also put limits on where the efficient classical Gibbs sampling algorithms (such as those recently developed by @AineshBakshi , Liu, Moitra, @ewintang ) can work.

Finally, to show quantum advantage, we borrow results from the Bergamaschi et al paper to show that these families of Gibbs states can be prepared efficiently with a quantum computer using the recent Lindbladian methods.

New paper: we show quantum advantage in Gibbs sampling with local Hamiltonians at constant temperature! This tackles one of my favourite questions: how "quantum" are systems at non-zero temperature? Work with the fantastic @joelrajakumar! Link: scirate.com/arxiv/2408.015…
