High vacuum update: This is now an electron beam update! IT ACTUALLY WORKS! I was aiming for 1E-7, but at 2.0E-5 Torr, I decided to try it anyway, and holy heck it actually worked! I think the insulation near the filament melted, and I could still get better vacuum, but this is still very exciting and stunning to see in person. I think the plasma that becomes more visible toward the end is the ionized vapor from the melting PTFE insulation. It was brightest the moment before the filament shorted out.
