Soulless branding may not be ugly. But it is forgettable. Healthcare has perfected forgettable. Thatch, however, is a different kind of healthcare company. One actually innovating structurally and technologically. Building a system that saves employers money while giving employees greater choice. Although this direction was scrapped, I thought it was clever. The mark, clearly a woven T shape. On-the-nose thatched. But also a metaphor for the idea that you stitch together your ideal healthcare across insurance plans and a curated marketplace. Technology holding human decisions together. This concept ditched the expected blues for a robust serif (the lovely Bradford from Lineto) over the usual geometric sans. Subversive for healthcare, but still inviting and trustworthy. Authentic, active lifestyle photography brings more of that human touch. The thatching motif gets remixed in ways that can lean expressive or structural depending on the application. Familiar enough to trust. Fresh enough to notice.

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m excited to join @fal as the new Head of Design. I’ve been collaborating with @gorkem and @burkaygur on the fal brand closely over the past few years, so it all made (too) much sense to continue this journey on a more permanent basis (and they could pull me out of FT-retirement). Excited to explore the space of generative media and work alongside the brightest minds. As for the studio, I’ll be still taking on projects under my studio still but on a much much more limited basis. 😌

I’m trying to be more intentional this year with broader references outside of just software. February was a deep dive into the life and work of Virgil Abloh. What do you recommend for March?

New in Readout: Assistant. Readout already scans your dev environment in the background. Now you can talk to it. Responses are almost instant, with rich content cards. It can also take actions, like cleaning up worktrees or fixing hygiene issues. → readout.org

Took a lot of feeling like an idiot to get to this. Generative brand concept for a quantum computing company representing wave-particle duality... that light is a wave and a beam at once 🤯... a core principle underlying how quantum computers actually work. As I sat with the idea, beautiful images flooded my head. But when I started sketching things out I couldn't shake the feeling that a flat surface was holding me back. Shaders let me close the distance between the idea and the image in my head. I'm off the deep end now. A humble reminder that feeling like an idiot is almost always worth the payoff.

I gave OpenClaw an export of my Apple Health data and asked it for some interesting analysis of heart rate vs travel data. It figured out that it could approximate my location from workout GPS annotations plus time zone stamps from other logged datapoints and then produced a bunch of interesting charts.
