On average (there are exceptions) the one mistake I see High Net Worth families make is buying a vacation home. It sounds great. Then you rarely use it. My advice - Rent the fancy place, stay for a few weeks, and leave the keys on the counter.

One of the biggest financial milestones isn’t your first million. It’s the first time you wake up, check your portfolio, and realize you made more money overnight than you used to make working all day.

@robbhurstCPA I would have to get a kindle if I did. I can not go back to having thousands of books sitting around cluttering up the house.

@SellersCounsel I am very glad you and I don't have similar jobs. I believe in being responsive but barring an emergency that is a same day response not a while I am sleeping response time.

@FranWalsh73 I think about this all the time. The step up in tax basis for my kids and the ability to exchange one rental for another if it makes sense. This can be such a powerful tool if used right.

Sell a rental property with $350,000 in gains, and you can owe roughly $84,500 in federal tax alone. Or you can owe $0 - if you follow one very strict set of rules. Here's the 1031 exchange: ↓

@MoneyQuotesX If he doesn't care that's fine. I think their is a difference between frugal and crazy though. 2009 starts to get into reliability problems and doesn't have the newest safety features. I don't love cars and don't drive anything flashy but its safe and reliable.

I have 50/50 custody and I struggle on drop off days just like any other parent would. This is my biggest stressor, and as my kids get older they get busier so I see less and less of them. I don't have some grand point to make, just that it sucks. Not sure what else to do but smile and put on a happy face.

The biggest risk I see with most clients is a successful business with no diversification. If they business does well, they do well. If the business struggles, the do as well. Once we get bills paid the first thing I do is have them start investing outside of the business. It doesn't have to be a lot to start, but multiple streams of income to grow net worth is how you build financial security.

@JosephHadaway My dogs sleep right next to my girl as well. When she is out of town they plaster themselves right next to me. It's nice for about 10 mins and then it gets very uncomfortable. I wish they went to the couch.

Had a client with three businesses in Maryland who had been paying estimated taxes to the wrong state. His prior CPA was filing to West Virginia because that is where he lives. For W-2 employees that makes sense because of reciprocity agreements. Business income doesn't follow the same rules. All business income generated in Maryland gets taxed in Maryland. Thankfully, we were able to amend the returns and correct the filings. As a result, years of misdirected payments were cleaned up.

@jakecrandall Agreed. If you make less figure out a better estimate + pay less. But if you make more, pay the voucher amount and save the rest until tax time. No reason to give the money to the IRS until it's due. Put that extra tax dough in a HYSA and make some money off it first.

Brokers - should you make estimated tax payments? Maybe! But, should you take the vouchers from your CPA and pay those exact amounts every quarter? By no means! One of the key characteristics of a broker's income is volatility and the vouchers provided from a CPA ignore this. The vouchers assume that your income will be smooth and we know that's not the case. Last week, I talked to a broker who made $700K+ last year. This year, the CPA suggested he make $30K payments in every quarter. The broker followed his suggestions. He's already made $60K of tax payments for 2026. The problem is the broker has only made $50K this year.

@JustJaySuggs I did too but I think it's a delicate balance. You need to hold them accountable but you don't need them to hate you for it. But yeah, sometimes kids just need told what to do.

I came from a “because I said so” type of parenting household. It made my life so much easier. Structure and discipline were built in, not a choice. In my work life, I see that kids are given too many choices, which comes from less structure and less discipline

@guessworkinvest Imposter syndrome is for real. But the moments where it is natural or you know how to do something steps 1-10 without thinking about it are magical. It all comes together eventually even if the small doubts never leave. Keep killing it.

It’s kind of a cool thought that I’m only 4.5 years into business ownership. I still feel like such a novice on many days, but it’s fitting — I’ve only just “graduated” with a basic 4-year degree. I’m excited to see what kind of business owner I am once I’m 10 or 20 years in.

IF ESPN cut 90% of the talking heads and went with 8 hours of Sportscenter from 4 a.m. to 12 noon, then did themed shows covering NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL (covering not debating) until the afternoon SportsCenter and live sports all night, would the ratings dip at all? /1
