@joenobk @2BTorr I like this advice. I just wish there weren’t so many negative consequences from people if someone takes this approach.

@Latterdaytruth We don’t believe in closed canon but we don’t believe in a canon filled with contradictions. Does our canon say there is one intelligence that is more intelligent than all intelligences? Does our canon say that there is a head God over all Gods?

Just finished my interview with Allie Beth Stuckey @conservmillen (on Glenn Becks Blaze Network @theblaze ) about the beliefs of Latter-day Saints. She really pressed me but I think in the end it went great and we helped create more clarity around the theological differences between Latter-day Saints and Protestants.

Yesterday’s Mormons: God had a God and we can become Gods! We have a Heavenly Mother too! Lost truths of the Restoration! Today’s Mormons: Well, we don’t really know if prophets really taught that and are embarrassed by Christians not liking it, so we never believed that.

For Latter-day Saints: Which better describes your belief Option 1: God the Father was subordinate to his Father who was subordinate to his father ext (Infinite regress) Option 2: God the Father is the HEAD God of ALL other Gods.

1. We each have a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother. 2. We know for certain we all have the same Heavenly Father. 3. We don’t know if there is only one Heavenly Mother or more than one. Is this your understanding too?

Chuck needs to read the whole sermon. That quote is about uncreated intelligences, not a denial of Joseph’s infinite regress that’s clearly taught in the same sermon. In King Follett, Joseph also taught that “God himself was once as we are now.” So you can’t quote the “spirit of man is eternal” line as though it disproves Joseph’s teaching that God progressed. It doesn’t. It just shows Chuck is young and clueless and just trying to cherry pick to win debate points and that you will be foolish enough to not know what the speech was about. Maybe we need to have a discussion about the infinite nature of intelligences.

@stackerco I don't understand the issue of infinite regress. I think we play semantics when we read the words "like God" or "receive all my father has" to me, it totally makes in the IR model. In the end it doesn't matter.

@Grownded Agreed. It doesn't matter at all to salvation. I personally have no issues with the infinite regress model. To me it totally makes sense.

Here's the thing about the infinite regress model: If it were important for salvation, we would be told in no uncertain terms that it was the case and it would be canonized. Same thing with Heavenly Mother. Same with getting your own planet. Same with spirit births. We're down here arguing over leadership, caffeine, tithing, sleeve lengths, swim suits, tattoos, bacon, immigration, and a dozen other things that keep us from being a Zion people. We can barely handle the lesser law, we don't get the greater light and knowledge. We don't get to know the good stuff until we are doing our ministering, lifting our brethren, making and upholding our covenants, repenting daily, giving full tithes and offerings, fulfilling our callings, not speaking evil of the Lord's anointed, bringing others unto Christ, etc.

If you deny infinite regress, you deny Joseph Smith or you’re just scared to death of it. “If Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and John discovered that God the Father of Jesus Christ had a Father, you may suppose that He had a Father also. Where was there ever a son without a father? And where was there ever a father without first being a son? Whenever did a tree or anything spring into existence without a progenitor? And everything comes in this way. Paul says that which is earthly is in the likeness of that which is heavenly—hence if Jesus had a Father, can we not believe that He had a Father also?” “… I despise the idea of being scared to death at such a doctrine, for the Bible is full of it.” —Joseph Smith He also warned: “When things that are of the greatest importance are passed over by weak-minded men without even a thought…” He knew this teaching would provoke outrage, critics and apostates cried: “Away with him! Crucify him!” and called it blasphemy when he taught, “Gods many and Lords many.” Primary sources: Joseph Smith Papers project (josephsmithpapers.org) — King Follett Discourse (Apr 7, 1844) & Sermon in the Grove.
